A current gay NFL player is strongly considering coming out publicly within the next few months.

The unnamed player's concern is more centered on potential harm from homophobic fans than it is the reaction from his fellow players.

"I honestly think the players of the NFL have been ready for an openly gay player for quite some time now," said Scott Fujita.

"Trust me, the coming out of a player would create much bigger waves outside the locker room than inside. The way I've seen the conversation around LGBT issues evolve, especially in the past few years, has been encouraging. Guys are more accepting than they used to be. Even those who raise personal objections to homosexuality, some of whom are good friends of mine, would still be able to coexist and accept a gay teammate."
any ideas on who it may be? or how many may actually be in the nfl?

It's pretty sad that a player has to be concerned to come out in today's World and I think Fujita is dead wrong about players being ready to coexist with and accept gay teammates.

I think it would be awesome if an NFL player came out. I think he should it would be great for the league, for him, great publicity for the team, and its time to make it happen. I saw Bryant Gumbel on HBO with gay athletes who have come out and its usually very positive.

Hopefully this is a step in the right direction for the league and for gay rights.

I'd like to see this happen with good results.

well that's one to come out who isnt playing. lets see how the reaction goes, this should dictate how a current gay player comes out.

the whole jon amechi thing in the nba probably scared away players from coming out.

I think it would be great if the NFL player was someone very prominent. I think teammates wouldnt care as much if he was very talented.
