LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Chicago Cubs and free agent first baseman Carlos Pena have agreed to terms of a one-year contract.

Financial details were not released, but the Chicago Tribune had reported it to be worth $10 million.

this team has so many problems... they honestly need to just clean house and build from within, rather than spend $10M on Carlos Pena.

All the analysts are praising this signing but I just don't understand it. With the issues that team has and the fact that they really don't have a TON of financial flexibility since they already have a ton of money on payroll for 2011, 1B is one of many problems they gotta fix.

I honestly believe they wanted to add a power bat in the lineup so the fans don't <Censored> that their big market team went through the offseason and did nothing.

Yeah Carlos Pena isn't worth 10 million.
Dude might hit, but that batting average is horrendous.

Luckily for the Cubs it's only 1 year

This deal reminded me just how impressive Pena has been the past couple of seasons. I thought he'd land a nice 4-5 year deal with Tampa but its evident Tampa is turning towards their younger positional players. I really see no problem with a 1 year, essentially, tryout with the Cubs. If Pena can put up numbers close to what he did in Tampa, he'll be locked down longterm.

Ok... Let me explain this one to you guys, because you aren't seeing it the right way.

Yes the deal is for $10 million, but who gives a <Censored>? It's a one year deal and the Cubs are one of the biggest markets in the league, so they have the money to pay for him. Pena is just being brought in to play 1B for this season, because he's definitley a much better option that what we have now, because well, before Pena we had no options to play 1B, besides Tyler Colvin who hasn't played there since college/high school.

The Cubs have money coming off the books after this season, and will hopefully be making a push for Prince Fielder or Albert Pujols to fill the 1B void long term. Obviously Adrian Gonzalez would have been ideal, but he's off the market now. As far as Pena's horrible batting average, it's honestly not a problem. He still gets on base and in the end, that's all that matters. He also will hopefully become the LH power bat the Cubs have been looking for since as long as I can remember. Plus there's always the chance he bounces back, which is kind of what the Cubs are hoping will happen (low risk, high reward).

It's really not that bad a deal... Just a one year deal, so the Cubs don't have to deal with Xavier Nady being brought back to play 1B or something <Censored>ty like that.

He's a good cleanup hitter, gets a lot of RBIs and can hit home runs but don't rely on him to get on base. He's not worth $10 million but it's just one year.

He has a .351 career OBP and three years ago he had .411 OBP and the year after a .377 OBP.

Which has been going down every year. .325 isn't that great of an OBP to me... but anyways I really meant average wise with that post above. Sorry. But I guess average can be overrated sometimes but not always.
