Cuban: Mavericks 'In Better Position' Without Deron William

Mark Cuban believes signing Deron Williams may not have been the best move.

"I don't want to pick on Deron Williams because he's a great, great, great player, and so it's not necessarily him, per se," Cuban said. "The conversation we had going back and forth -- and obviously the decision was to go for him -- but the conversation was, 'OK, once you add $17.1 million in salary to what we'd have with Dirk (Nowitzki) and Trix (Shawn Marion), then what do you do?' That's your squad. And it's not just your squad for this year. It's your squad for next year other than the $3.3 million mini midlevel.

"So that was a challenge that we had because we want to win, and everybody talks about Dirk's window. Well, not only would it have been difficult to add players, then it also would have been difficult to trade players, and in reality that was the same problem that Deron had. Because he looked and saw the same thing and said, 'OK, now what are you going to do?'"

Williams was reportedly unsure about the Mavericks’ future, choosing instead to sign a five-year, $98 million deal with the Nets.

Well honestly , I really like what Dallas has done once they knew D-Will wasn't going to sign with them ...

hard to say it but hes right. they made some pretty good moves, nothing to put them over the top but still good. DWill would have eaten salary and made it hard to add to that team so they added cheaper contract and more talent.

The moves done this year are like patchwork. Its not going to lead to a championship, they will put them in the playoffs. But the Mavericks are waiting for the right free agent to make as a #1 and let Dirk settle into that #2 role as he ages which is fine with me.

Seems that Dallas is one of those teams that can bring some pieces together and compete. A lot of people, me included, thought they looked really old last year, so they fixed that with some of their additions and should see them in the playoffs again this year.

The Mavericks will likely start to rebuild when Dirk decides he is done. Nets definitely give Deron a faster chance at winning for many years in my opinion.
