LOS ANGELES _ Mark Cuban was talking about NBA prospects and a young Asian guard in particular.

He gave his stock answer.

“If he’s good, we’re looking at him,” Cuban said. “I don’t care if the guy is fromUpper Slobovia. If he can play, we’ll take them. If Brittney Griner can play, we’ll take herwith our second-round pick. I don’t care.”[alignright]
[/alignright]

And with that, the can of worms officially got ripped open.  Cuban said he’s serious about the possibility of bringing in Baylor’s 6-8 star now that her college eligibility is done.

“If she’s the best on the board, we’ll take her,” Cuban said. “If we have the 60th pick and she’s on the board, we still might take her.”  The quick reaction to Cuban’s comments is that this is a publicity stunt that he would even think seriously about Griner, who dominated the women’s game at the college level.

But he promises he’s not simply blowing smoke.  “I’ve thought about it already,” he said. “Would I do it? And right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it.

“You never know until you give someone a chance. And it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it. If we had tryouts, I would have no problem inviting her to work out and see how she did. No problem whatsoever.”

Cuban said he’s watched Griner play a lot, but hasn’t really been able to draw any conclusions. He said he’d like to see her against tougher competition.
It certainly would be a good way to spice up the NBA’s summer league.

Griner later responded with a tweet: “I would hold my own! Lets do it”

Ann Meyers Drysdale was the first woman to get a tryout with an NBA team. The former UCLA and U.S. women’s Olympic team star signed a contract with the Indiana Pacers in 1979 but didn’t make the team.

yep. She wouldn't even be a Center in the NBA, so she's be defended by players like LeBron. good luck with that Mark. I do kind of understand his idea though, that a lot of 2nd round players never last in the NBA long anyway, so fuck it why not -- but unfortunately there are like 3 dozen reasons why not.

Honestly, the only players I could ever see going from NCAA Women's or WNBA to the NBA are Forwards that could play G, like Taurasi or or something. But even then those players would be off the bench their whole career.

Serious question, is that legal? I seriously thought women weren't allowed in the NBA, NFL, etc and that's why there are womens leagues and shit lol.

well there was that woman who tried out as a kicker in the NFL and set back the women's movement about 30 years. Idk if that can be done in the NBA though.

I'm trying to look it up, and most answers I see say there's no rule in the NBA that prohibits women from the league. And I'm not surprised because feminists would flip a shit if there was a rule like that.

I doubt there's an official rule that says you have to have a dick to play in the NBA, activists would be all over that shit. There was just never anybody that would make the cut.

We forget how fucking amazing even late 2nd round picks are. Even with the best women in the world you can probably find a dude that's just as good, especially considering how athletic today's game is.

The more I read his quotes from this article and others, the more I accept this. He doesn't think she's good. He just knows if he sold Brittney Griner Maverick's jerseys they would fly off the shelves. Women would flock to their local Dick's store (ehuh) and buy a jersey.

Play on Playa.

Cuban ain't stupid. He knows there's money to make off this. Even if it doesn't come from her actually making the team and selling her jersey. Which obviously is a long shot.

was looking up Griner's weight (208 lbs). Its way too low of a number to be in the NBA. For comparison, she is 3lbs heavier than Ray Allen. She's the weight of a small SG/bigger PG, but plays as a C in women's ball. She cant do it.

But in the process of looking up her weight and others weight, i found something SHOCKING

Manute Bol, 7'7"... only 200 pounds. I know he was thin, but i didnt know THAT thin

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban suggested that he might consider drafting Brittney Griner, but Connecticut women's coach Geno Auriemma doesn't think much of the notion.

Cuban told reporters that if Griner is the best player available, "I will take her."

"Right now, I'd lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it," he added. "You never know unless you give somebody a chance."

Auriemma said Wednesday that Cuban is a financial genius, but "his genius would take a huge hit if he drafted Brittney Griner."

"I think it would be a sham," he said. "The fact that a woman could actually play right now in the NBA and compete successfully against the level of play that they have is absolutely ludicrous."
