The Giants have exceeded expectations this year, but that’s not enough to keep Tom Coughlin off the hot seat in New York.

Bob Glauber of Newsday writes Tuesday about Coughlin’s future with the team. After two straight losses and games against the Saints and Packers up next, we suppose this was inevitable.

“[Coughlin] knows as well as anyone that he’s in a bottom-line business,” Glauber writes. “If his team isn’t in the tournament in January, the Giants likely will make a move — and it will be a necessary move.”

After the team’s 2009 collapse, Giants owner John Mara uncharacteristically promised “major changes.”

After the sluggish end to the 2010 regular season, Mara said that players still responded to Coughlin and decided to stay the course. It looks like Coughlin won’t get another chance if the Giants barely miss the playoffs, no matter how many injuries his team has suffered.

The schedule does the Giants no favors, but we’re wary of counting them out yet. No one expected them to win in New England: They won. No one expected the Eagles to win in New York: Philly pulled it off.

The point here is that the Giants could certainly beat the Saints this week and the Dolphins could easily surprise the Cowboys. And then suddenly Coughlin looks “off” the hot seat again.

Coughlin has plenty of time to get things turned around. Six weeks doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a lifetime in this week-to-week league

Coughlin has been on the hot seat for the last 2-3 years it seems.

He's on the hot seat because once again the Giants are showing early signs of a second half collapse.
