The Indianapolis Colts have signed veteran NFL quarterback Kerry Collins as an insurance policy in case Peyton Manning is unavailable while he rehabs from neck surgery.

Colts owner Jim Irsay announced the signing on his Twitter feed this morning.

“We have agreed to terms with Kerry Collins...more details to come,” Irsay tweeted
This really raises the speculation that Peyton won't be ready for Week 1.

Collins is a very solid pickup. They're probably not releasing how long Manning's been out, but this obviously means that it's more than just one week. I think we all knew it was for a longer period of time when the Favre rumors started spreading. That being said, they bring in a veteran QB, who's been starting the last few seasons, and throwing the ball very well. He's got a great head on his shoulders, but will the running game pick up to help him out? In Tennessee he had Chris Johnson leading the running attack, but here in Indy, he'll be relying on Joseph Addai to take off some of that passing defense pressure. Solid move though.

They're just playing it safe. I think Peyton might miss 1 or 2 games but nothing more than that.

Good luck Colts fans. Britt and Johnson made Collins. Sure Wayne is great, better than Britt, but Britt can really go get those inaccurate jump balls Collins throws, and IDK of Wayne can. He's more a possession guy. Now I'm really confident they'll get off to a slow start, and fall behind.

If they were playing it safe, they would have signed Sorgi, a guy who knows the system well, and wouldn't have to buy out of retirement. I bet he misses 3-4 weeks here.

I think this is a very good move for the Colts. Kerry is still a serviceable QB who knows this division very well and I think he has the throwing ability to make this Colts offense run pretty smoothly.

that doesn't make any sense. If Sorgi knows the system, wouldn't you want him as your QB for 3-4 weeks over Collins, who doesn't know the system? That's why I think he misses 1, maybe 2 games, but nothing more.

Don't get me wrong, if you expect the guy to miss 3, 4, maybe even 5 weeks then you'd want an experienced QB like Collins. I just think your reason sucks ;)

I'd take Sorgi either way. Collins has 2 weeks to learn the most complicated offense in the league. Good luck.
Sorgi, would just have to refresh himself with it all. Collins is a scrub.

How does my reason suck? Learning the offense is a BIG overlook in most cases. You know how thick the Colts playbook is? If your QB already knows it, he can worry about his play, rather than the playbook, which Collins will have to do. Plus, the Colts are use to a quick release QB, like Peyton. Collins, holds and holds and holds the ball, and his release takes a year. I just don't see the fit.

I said ur reasoning sucked because i misunderstood what you were saying. You're talking about playing safe on a 3-4 game level and i'm talking about playing it safe on a 1-2 game level, which is a huge difference.

I thought you meant Sorgi would be the safe option for 1 or 2 games.
