Jack Del Rio is not the only AFC South coach losing his job today. The Indianapolis Colts have announced that they fired defensive coordinator Larry Coyer.

In a statement released by the team, Colts head coach Jim Caldwell said, “The move was made to improve communication and production.”

“We feel this is the most effective and realistic way to move forward and win games this season,” Caldwell added. “We appreciate all of the effort and hard work Larry Coyer put forth in his three years with the Colts.”

Colts linebackers coach Mike Murphy has been assigned to the defensive coordinator position. Murphy is in his 14th season with the Colts.

It’s not at all surprising that heads would roll in Indianapolis, considering that the Colts are by far the worst team in the league. But the timing of the move is strange, as is the decision to single out Coyer when everyone in Indianapolis should be on the hottest of hot seats after this debacle of a season.

Coyer is the first to go, but it seems safe to say he’ll be far from the only one who loses his job with the Colts in the weeks ahead.

Not the week to change defensive coordinators

They need to be planning on how to beat Tom Brady, and this will surely be a setback for them

Now, what could be better than facing Curtis Painter? Oh yeah, facing Dan Orlovsky ;) (Painter has been benched)

It's about fucking time. I knew he was going to be the first to go, and that's a great start for this organization at this point in time. Coyer made perhaps one of the easiest schemes in all of football very difficult to understand for these players, and it's pretty damn clear with the lack of success or anything this defense has had. Good riddance.

You really think we are planning on stopping Tom Brady this week? This team is just worried about what size of jersey Andrew Luck is going to need come Draft day at this point in time.

Yup. I really do believe they are going to draft Luck.

In reality, I also think that there are really two scenarios. The Colts management finds a happy medium to get both Luck and Peyton on the same roster, or it comes to the conclusion that Peyton is either traded/retired.

It's not something I'm going to be happy to see but this team is in shambles right now. We need to build for the future.

The Colts are in a damn messy situation anyway you cut it. I really don't want to see Peyton leaving, but the FO and the players involved must get on the same page to work out the decisions for next year.

It doesn't help that Robert Mathis and Reggie Wayne are both upcoming FAs this season, either..
