Jordan Bastian of MLB.com is reporting that manager Cito Gaston is lobbying for the organization to bring Carlos Delgado back to Toronto. Most thought the only likely destination for Delgado was to re-sign with the Mets, however, New York's signing of Fernando Tatis leaves Minaya set at 1B and focusing all of his attention on filling spots in the rotation.
Take the Mets out of the equation and there aren't many other options left for the 37-year old Delgado. Perhaps a return to Toronto, a place where he has a mega fan favorite, is just what he needs to close out his career with some pop. "If there's some way to bring Carlos back here, I'd love to see him back here," says Cito Gaston and I have a feeling that fans will not disagree. Such a move may not make sense for a team getting younger by the day in the Jays but Its gonna take a veteran or 2 to really help some of these younger guys along.
Roy Halladay, the face of the franchise for long, is now gone. With most Jays' fans still in a deep depression over his exit and feeling absolutely no hope for the 2010 season, the signing of Delgado would be a nice "pick-me-up" for the organization. Better yet, add Delgado and Johnny Damon and watch the city get a little more excited about baseball. You know fans want a reason to come out to the ballpark and you would think that Vernon Wells, Delgado, and Damon in the same line-up would be worth watching.
