Just two years removed from a 2,000-yard season, Titans running back Chris Johnson is setting his goals significantly lower this year.

With 930 yards through 14 games this season, Johnson says he’s hoping to gain 1,000 yards.

“Any running back who runs for over 1,000 yards, it puts you up there in a group with elite running backs,” Johnson said, via Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. “Even though I am not having the best of years, to go over 1,000 yards, that’s something a lot of people thought probably wouldn’t happen this year.”

A 1,000-yard season is a fine achievement for an ordinary NFL starting running back, but the Titans rewarded Johnson with an extraordinary contract this year because they expected him to get a lot more than 1,000 yards a season. And it’s no sure thing that Johnson will even get the 70 more yards he needs to reach 1,000: Johnson has failed to gain 35 yards in six different games this year, so he might struggle to average 35 yards over the last two.

Although Johnson has been better over the second half of the season than he was in the first, this season will go down as a major disappointment, even if he does reach 1,000 yards.

It's funny that with 2 games left, he needs 70 yards... If you asked him if he could get 70 yards in one game last year, imagine his response.

Chris Johnson needs 14 yards to save $300,000 in 2012 pay

CJ2k is still looking for 1k.

Chris Johnson is 14 rushing yards short of 1,000 on the season. As Florio has mentioned a few times on PFT, Johnson needs to reach 1,000 yards to avoid seeing his 2012 salary reduced by $300,000.

Gaining 14 yards would seem to be a sure thing for Johnson, but he’s not the same player he was a few years ago. Johnson rushed for only 13 yards against the Falcons in late November. Johnson has under 25 rushing yards in five games this year.

That’s a remarkable statistic and it’s not all because of Johnson’s slow start. Two of his worst games came in the second half of the year. For one-third of the games this season, Johnson has given the Titans virtually nothing on the ground.

Add it all up, and we still wonder if the Titans will reduce Johnson’s base salary all the way down to $0 by cutting him.

And anyone who knows anything knows that the combo of Harris, Amano, and Scott is one of the worst interior lines in the league.

Great RBs still put up excellent numbers with a shitty offensive line. No excuse.

Okay, you go out and try to get some yards when you got two 300+ pound DT's running at you before the ball is handed off. And that's not exaggerating. Clearly no one actually watches the Titans (which I can't blame you, they've got to be the most boring team in the league). No, he's not playing his best football, or close to it, but no one could be successful with the blocking he has.

I know everyone here is biased against CJ because of the contract among other things, but you cannot tell me he has anything close to adequate blocking.

AP hasn't had any blocking the past two years and has been better than CJ

How do you figure? In the last 4 years (the only 4 years CJ has been in the NFL), CJ has more total rushing yards, and receiving yards. So...how has AP been better? Because of all his 1 yard TD runs that anyone can do?

Everyone thinks I'm a CJ homer, when in reality I'm not. I know he's not the best RB in the league. Matt Forte is, or was, we'll see how he comes back from the knee injury.
