Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress is leaning toward starting backup Tarvaris Jackson at quarterback Sunday as Brett Favre recovers from two fractures to his ankle, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune has reported, citing an NFL source.

And Favre has told acquaintances he isn't convinced Childress will let him play, according the NFL Network.

Favre missed his second straight day of practice for the Vikings on Thursday but walked around the facility without the oversized boot that had been protecting the injury that is putting his league-record 291-straight starts streak in jeopardy. The signs of progress were small but noticeable.

The 41-year-old quarterback limped through the locker room with a heavy wrap on his ankle, which was injured in the loss to Green Bay on Sunday night.

Asked if he thought he could play at New England, Favre said, "I wouldn't put anything past me, to be honest with you."

Favre has a stress fracture in his left ankle as well as an avulsion fracture in the heel bone, where a fragment has been torn away by a tendon or ligament. He consulted with the doctors who performed surgery on his ankle this summer to get him ready for a 20th NFL season, and was told that the injury would not get any worse by playing on it.

"He's been a little better every day," Childress said Thursday. "Whether it's good enough to play in an NFL football game remains to be seen. Just have to take it a day at a time."

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Brent can't deny it all he wants but he wants to keep that consecutive starts streak in tact. Just think about how close this man is to being able to say that in 20 years of playing in the NFL, he never missed playing in 1 game. I think for the long run, the Vikings need to get him some time to heal up, rather than watch him limp in and out of the pocket. The Vikings can leave this weekend at 2-5 and still be within reach to win their weakass division and make the playoffs.

It's not like Brett has even been good this season. He was playing awful and now the guy was hopping on 1 leg late in that Packers game.

They gotta go with a healthier QB like Jackson, whose mobile and can bring a little spark to this team -- and we know that they need it desperately.

No, trust me, this is Brent.

Brett retired after beating the Cowboys in the 2009 playoffs.

They should start him to keep his streak going, but after the 1st play, sit him for the rest of the game, and let Jackson take over.

I feel that's how they'll do it. Start him, and then take him out for Jackson. That way, the streak is still alive, and they don't struggle with a one-legged QB. Although, Favre says if he's going to start, he's going to play the whole game. If he does play the whole game, he better get used to watching the defense run past him with the ball.
