Chiefs release Pro Bowl CB Brandon Flowers
Chris Houston is no longer a member of the Chiefs. (USATSI)More NFL offseason: League minicamp dates | Latest news, notes
Despite making the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career last season, the Chiefs have parted ways with cornerback Brandon Flowers.
So confirmed Flowers on Friday.
The Chiefs were reportedly trying to trade Flowers earlier this offseason after drafting cornerback Phillip Gaines in the third round last month. Flowers had been scheduled to make a base salary of $5.5 million, and there were plenty of insinuations that Flowers simply didn't fit the mold of cornerbacks that defensive coordinator Bob Sutton prefers.
“We appreciate Brandon's contributions to the team over the last six seasons,” Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said in a statement. “It's in the best interest of the club and the player to part ways at this time. We wish him nothing but the best as he continues his career.”
Another reason the Chiefs are OK with getting rid of Flowers, who will count as $7 million of dead money for the 2014 salary cap (unless the team designates him a post-June 1 cut) and $4 million for 2015.
