CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cavaliers are interested in rehiring former coach Mike Brown to replace Byron Scott, a longtime NBA insider told The Plain Dealer today, and may move quickly for fear that other NBA teams will court Brown.

The Cavs fired Scott on Thursday, after three seasons and a 64-166 record.

In a Thursday afternoon press conference, Cavs general manager Chris Grant said the search for a new coach would begin today, and he declined to answer whether Brown would be a candidate. The question is a valid one because Grant and Brown are close friends, and Grant said on Thursday the team wanted to improve defensively.

Brown is a defensive specialist who was hired by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2011 and fired just five games into this season.

Brown, the 2009 NBA coach of the year who is the winningest coach by percentage in Cavs history with a 272-138 record, told The Plain Dealer on Thursday night that he had not been contacted by the Cavs but would listen if they called.

"If anybody calls, you have to listen," Brown said in a telephone interview. "I'm not rushing to get back to [coaching]. Whether it's the Cavs situation or anybody else, it has to feel right for both sides.

"If they call, I wouldn't hang up the phone. I'd definitely listen to what anybody has to say. But then you have to decide if it's the right situation for myself, my family and the organization."
Honestly, I would be all for this. The only guy better at coaching defense then him is probably Thibs. Just need to make sure he's got an offensive guru as an assistant running that side of the ball.
