Confirming earlier reports, the Washington Capitals have announced Adam Oates is their new head coach.
“Adam was a highly intelligent player in the NHL for 19 seasons,” said Caps GM George McPhee in a release. “He has been an assistant coach in our conference for the past three seasons and is prepared to lead our club as head coach.”
We assume there will be an introductory press conference, at which point reporters can ask Oates about his hockey philosophy. For example, does he plan to let Alex Ovechkin off his leash?
Oates was an offensive machine during his NHL career and served as set-up man for Brett Hull, one of the greatest goal-scorers of all time.
Of course, Oates he was also an assistant coach in New Jersey under Jacques Lemaire, one of the greatest defensive minds of all time.
