Speaking to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (via the Charlotte Observer), the Panthers' QB discussed what the Falcons mean to him now that they're a division rival.

It's always a heavily critiqued game. ... I've always been a Falcons fan, and I'm still a Falcons fan except for those two times a year.

Newton's comments aren't popular among the overreacting set, who choose to see this as the young QB not having enough loyalty to the Panthers. Those predisposed to disliking Newton will continue to do so, much as Colin Kaepernick caught some flack for wearing a Miami Dolphins hat at a Fourth of July party.

Let the overreaction begin.

Don't have a problem with it.. I'm still an Ohio State fan even though I attend Cleveland State.

Strangely, this is a topic that almost never gets brought up.  All NFL players grew up rooting for some team, it must be weird to try to destroy a team that you grew up cheering for.  The money helps, I'm sure.

It's rare to see someone get drafter by the team they've loved their whole life.

Look at Harvey, he grew up hating the Mets and loving the Yankees lol

Which is why the speculation that Harvey "intentionally" hit Cano is bonkers.

But you're right, it's surprising this isn't brought up more. People seem to just expect athletes to hate every division rival. He didn't choose to be a Panther, the Panthers chose him.

I couldn't be mad at anyone being a falcons fan, I mean we just have an easily like-able team in general regardless of where your hometown is lol
