The Los Angeles Lakers have reached an agreement on a four-year contract extension with center Andrew Bynum worth about $58 million, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.
The deal would keep Bynum under contract with the Lakers through the 2012-13 season, according to the report. The first three years of the deal are reportedly worth nearly $42 million, with a team option fourth year for about $16 million.
Bynum, who will earn $2.8 million this season, showed significant improvement for the Lakers in 2007-08 before being lost for about half of the season and the playoffs to an injury. His healthy return is one reason many observers are touting the Lakers as a favorite to return to the NBA Finals and win the championship.

still has not played a full season healthy and productive -- Lakers jumped the gun on this one.

he has shown promise, but let's see if he can duplicate before giving him huge dollars

I think the Lakers may have been afraid that he would get a huge offer from a desperate team this summer and have to match.

Yea I kinda agree with jarrod on this one even though I think its a good move. They shoulda waited til he proved himself most of the year first

also, dont put all on the lakers guys.
he is only 21 and has definitely showed flashes of being a great center.
had they not extended him, other teams wouldve offered him big bucks this summer, forcing the lakers to match. they got a good deal on him imo

yes at the moment he is overpaid, however, great centers dont come along very often and like i said, bynum has given every implication that he is definietly on his way to being a great NBA center soon

Yeah exactly, we don't want another Turiaf situation especially with a young full-of-potential big body like Bynum. We got him a lot cheaper in lue of the deal he originally wanted so I'm cool with it. If it doesn't work out they can always decline his option :D
