1. Patriots
New England continues to fire on all cylinders, but it's not like they've played much for competition as of yet. Looking at their remaining schedule, I can only see the Broncos and Giants knocking them off, and after those two games, it's a fucking cake walk. After that, they'd have to rest starters to lose. They may finish with another 16-0 mark, but this team is significantly more vulnerable than the 18-1 team was. Don't read into perfection too much, just yet.
2. Broncos
The Broncos jump Cincinnati because Cincinnati really struggled with a Pittsburgh team that just can't get all the pieces together this season. Later that night in Denver, the Broncos demolished the Green Bay Packers and held the almighty Aaron Rodgers under 100 yards of passing, which is nearly impossible to do in today's NFL. Christ, I don't remember even Ryan Lindley throwing for less than 100 yards. Nevertheless, I think it's time we acknowledge something--even if Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr. are slightly behind Darrelle Revis, the pairing of these two corners has a much, much greater impact than even the best in the game has each and every week. What a defense.
3. Bengals
Andy Dalton was going to play a sub-par game, but he found AJ Green when it matters most. For all intents and purposes, the Bengals held serve. They're a force to be reckoned with.
4. Panthers
I have a hard time doing this, as I find both Green Bay and Arizona to be much more dangerous come playoff time because of the weapons they have at their disposal. Cam Newton has Greg Olson and a bunch of receivers who are even worse than what the Rams and Seahawks trot out every week. Nevertheless, we must acknowledge the impact of a dynamic quarterback on offense and a dominant ball-hawk on defense. Josh Norman is a man among boys right now, and Cam Newton can do just enough with his multi-faceted repertoire to keep the Panthers out of the loss column.
5. Cardinals
For a team that plays down to its competition, I find it just as hard to place the Cardinals above the Packers as I find it to place the Panthers in the top 5. At the same time, the Cardinals have a wider array of offensive weapons than Green Bay does right now. I trust Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd, John Brown, Chris Johnson, Andre Ellington, and David Johnson much, much more in big games than I do Randall Cobb and [insert scrubs A, B, C, and D here]. The Packers are going to have to run the ball more of they'll beat themselves with poor schematics.
6. Packers
Perhaps the loss to Denver will prove to be a fluke, but I really don't think so unless Mike McCarthy changes some of his offensive approaches. He and his Offensive Coordinator need to get together and re-write their game plan structures each and every week to make sure that they can't be held to 10 points again when they've got the best quarterback in the game. I think they'll be OK, and I think their defense is as advertised. I just don't know if it'll be enough without Jordy Nelson.
7. Jets
I still like this team if it can get a quarterback healthy and pound the rock with Chris Ivory. I just don't know if that's going to happen. This team will fall out of the top 15 if they lose to the Jags, I can promise you that. Defensively, they're more than good enough on most weeks. They ran into Derek Carr when he was smoking hot and got burned. I don't expect that to happen again.
8. Steelers
This team gets Ben back but loses Bell. How unfortunate. They'll be OK so long as they don't run DeAngelo Williams into the ground before playoff time. They need to go running back by committee, get to the playoffs, and then feature Williams. If they wear him down now, they'll have no running game later. If they play their cards right, they'll still be dangerous in January.
9. Vikings
That was not an impressive win in Chicago. Teddy Bridgewater was terrible for 55 minutes of that game but just good enough late to get it done. He's really starting to remind me of Russell Wilson, but without the tendency to run. He can be absolutely terrible for 3 and half quarters but his defense is so good it doesn't matter. Minnesota needs to force Teddy to grow. They need to make him sharpen his deep ball and perhaps get rid of the gloves. You can't convince me that has nothing to do with the way his passes tend to sail. They also need to make sure that Adrian Peterson doesn't dance them into 3rd and long situations when opposing teams are stopping the run. If they do these things, they have a shot to win the NFC North. If they don't, we're looking at a team that will now lose 3 straight to fall to 5-5. It's that simple, Minnesota--hold your quarterback accountable and don't fall into predictable play calling habits and you'll be OK.
10. Seahawks
They're .500 and dangerous in the NFC West. Wilson is still underwhelming but the defense is back in gear, though against sub-par competition so far. Let's see what they're made of down the road.
11. Saints
So much for my ranking them 29 two weeks ago. The Saints are hot and have some favorable games on their schedule. If they don't let down in games they should win, they're going to be in the Wild Card picture. At the same time, I just don't know if Rob Ryan's defense can hold up. I used to think he was a special coordinator, and maybe he is when he's got the pieces, but to me he's just a guy who out-thinks himself with too much complexity and too many exotic looks for all 11 guys to be on the same page. The Saints have a chance to be good, but they have to keep their defense off the field as much as possible.
12. Giants
What an unfortunate way to lose, especially with a defense that's much better than the showing it had on Sunday. Every team has a laugher during the year, but Spags and co. just need to wash the piss of their legs and move on to next week. That's about all there is to it--the offense is fine.
13. Raiders
A win in Pittsburgh could catapult this team into the top 10. Carr is hot and finding everybody in his arsenal, and the defense is just good enough with a momentum swinging talent controlling one side of the field.
14. Rams
They continue to win via Todd Gurley's legs and a stout defense, but it's not like holding Colin Kaepernick down is any kind of accomplishment. If they beat Minnesota at the Vault this week, they'll be on the rise.
15. Falcons
lol they lost to the Bucs
16. Ravens
This is high, but I see them as a team with a favorable schedule coming up that can string some wins together. If they can get near .500, it'll be nearly unprecedented, but even with the loss of Steve Smith, it's possible. I'll throw them a bone this week, but one more bad loss and a permanent spot in the 20s is all theirs.
17. Dolphins
Oh look, making the team work hard only pans out when they play shit competition. They have to win this weekend or they are toast.
18. Bills
Hopefully they're getting healthy or their season will be lost to injury. There's too much talent here to finish below .500, but when you challenge the Bills, they say, "Just watch us do it!"
19. Colts
I just love it when overrated players show their true colors. Andrew Luck is a turnover machine with some nice attributes. He's Eli Manning with an even goofier voice. He's bad Brett Favre 24/7, throwing it to anybody who puts their hands up and hollers his name. If only he'd realize opposing defenders have caught on!
20. Texans
I only put them here because Andrew Luck is giving them a chance to win the AFC South
21. Cowboys
Dear God do they need Tony Romo.
22. Redskins
Baaaylorrrr! MSU! Baaaylorrrr! MSU! Noodle arm! Noodle arm! Noodle arm!
Then Kirk Cousins screams "YOU LIKE THAT!" at the wrong people when the opposing team is just incompetent enough to make him look like an NFL quarterback.
23. Eagles
Chip Kelly could have wrecked the NFL by making it more of a spread out type league....if his system actually worked at this level, but it doesn't, and it's awesome. The College game has been ruined by spread systems. We don't need the NFL to suffer the same fate.
24. Chiefs
They're climbing!
25. Lions
They're falling
26. Bucs
Win 2 and a row and I'll move you up.
27. Browns
They're like a soap opera. Constant drama brought on by themselves.
28. Chargers
The loss of Keenan Allen has brought about their doom.
29. Jaguars
Lets see if they can improve or if Gus Bradley can't get them out of neutral.
30. Bears
Well, Alshon Jeffrey is awesome. They've got that going for them.
31. Titans
They're still bad.
32. 49ers
They're still bad.
