1. Patriots
Once again, this annoys me. Thankfully, the Jets showed that the Pats are beatable. Unfortunately, the Jets don't have the offensive firepower to do it, and the rest of the AFC East doesn't have the defense to do it. Somebody please knock this team off.
2. Bengals
Ranking held neutral due to the bye week.
3. Packers
Ranking held neutral due to the bye week.
4. Broncos
Ranking held neutral due to the by week. We'll see if they can flip 3 and 4 with a win this week.
5. Jets
All this team needed to do to cement themselves in the top 10 is compete with the Patriots, and they did just that. If they can avoid a bad loss over the next few weeks, they might even climb.
6. Panthers
What can I say, I completely misplaced Atlanta in the top 10 this past week and for that I apologize. Only the Panthers belong here from the NFC South. Folks, if you aren't watching Josh Norman any chance you get, you aren't a football fan. I don't think the Panthers can climb into the top 5 because of their lack of receivers, but Cam Newton is making it work so far.
7. Cardinals
A bad loss for the Steelers has the Cardinals moving up. These birds are vulnerable when an opposing defense can limit their run game, but Carson Palmer is still dangerous with so many weapons at his disposal. The defense is overrated, much like Patrick Peterson, but it is pretty good.
8. Giants
I really don't like putting this team here, but I do think they can continue to win, especially if they get healthy. They aren't even above .500 if Tony Romo is healthy, but sometimes the dominoes simply fall in your favor in your division, so the Giants best send a Thank You card to the Eagles defense for laying one bad hit on Romo, much like Michael Boley did a few years back to initially break the bone.
9. Steelers
They're rising to the challenge of playing with a backup quarterback some weeks, faltering in others. They're keeping the ship above water, and that's all they need to do. Ben looks like he'll return soon.
10. Seahawks
It's almost like they read my rankings last week, as both Ricardo Lockette (#83, if you were wondering) and Chris Matthews (#13, if you were wondering) saw significant snaps at WR last week while Baldwin and Kearse spent a good amount of offensive snaps where they belong--on the sideline. 89 and 15 had big catches at different points during the game, but this offense moves best when they aren't every down players. It was also nice to see Tyler Lockett get a deep route that resulted in a touchdown. The Seahawks are simply misusing Jimmy Graham at this point, though.
11. Vikings
Bad losses for the Bills and Colts have the Vikings jumping further than I expected, but how can you ignore this defense and Mike Zimmer's ability to make in game adjustments. In previous years, this defense would have never recovered from a slow start, but Zimmer tightened all the clamps and blitzed the ever loving shit out of a statue quarterback. Great job, Mr. Zimmer. Teddy also looked much better this week. Let's hope that can prove to be a trend and not an anomalous outing. One quick thing--the offense will continue to sputter for portions of the game if they continue to predictably force-feed Adrian Peterson. The guy isn't the same, anymore. Can we please change how we use him?
12. Raiders
I don't like how they couldn't add to the lead as the Chargers mounted a comeback, but the Raiders effectively ended a division's opponent's playoff hopes and who says they can't keep winning?
13. Rams
Todd Gurley just might carry this team to Wild Card contention. Nick Foles has never been a high turnover type of QB, so even if he does struggle with accuracy from time to time, it might not matter. The defense isn't excellent, but it's good enough to keep them in games and with a running game that can shorten games with long drives, the Rams have a chance.
14. Dolphins
I still don't think this team is very good, but climbing to .500 is akin to being a top 15 team in this league, at this point.
15. Saints
Perhaps I was wrong about this team. A winnable game this week gives them a chance to climb to .500, too, and with how shitty the NFC South is, anything is possible.
16. Falcons
I know they only have one loss, but this team looks like complete and utter shit right now. This ranking is definitely exaggerated but only beating the Titans by a score or 10-7 as a division leader speaks much louder than anything else.
17. Cowboys
It's not like Seattle's offense is going to run away with Sunday's game, so I'm giving this team one more chance to stay afloat. If they fall to 2-5, though, next week's ranking will be no higher than 20.
18. Colts
Speaking of teams that aren't very good, the Colts continue to underwhelm, and Andrew Luck's turnovers are a huge part of that. Many of us were crowning him a top 7 QB coming into the season, but he's not even playing at a top 10 level right now. The kid's got time to get it right in a bad division, but to say I'm disappointed in his play is rather polite, on my part.
19. Bills
Injuries are simply doing this team in, right now. Let's hope they can get healthy over the bye week and pick up a few wins after that to put themselves back in the race. Credit to EJ Manuel for overcoming bad play early in the game to give them a chance, though. Like him or not, he throws a beautiful deep ball and the touchdown to Marcus Easley got them back in the game.
20. Redskins
Yes, Kirk Cousins, I do like it when you play just well enough to allow Jay Gruden to continue to hold down a significantly better quarterback for absolutely no reason. The Redskins are a mess and thought hiring an egomaniac to handle an egomaniac was a good idea, and look what it's come to--starting a noodle-armed 3rd stringer just because he can.
21. Eagles
LOL at this team. Speaking of egomaniacs, Chip Kelly is paving his own road out of town with bad personnel decisions.
22. Lions
This team is too poorly coached for the talent level that they have. Hiring Jim Caldwell was a great idea, initially, as he made them more disciplined as opposed to the Ford Field Clown Car that Jim Schwartz rolled out every Sunday, but Caldwell is not equipped to adjusting to sub-par personnel and the OL has given out on him.
23. Ravens
They're in every game, and while they won't make the playoffs, I can see them giving some Wild Card hopeful a devastating loss later in the season.
24. Chargers
This team is done. Cooked. It's over. Drop the curtain and shut down Qualcomm for the year.
25. Browns
Josh McCown gave his best Gus Frerotte impression and, like Frerotte, ended up hurting himself. My god, the Browns are entertaining.
26. Bucs
How do you give up that lead to Kirk Cousins? You run an outdated defense that doesn't rush the passer. Pathetic. Much like Monte Kiffin before him, Lovie Smith and Leslie Frazier have no place in today's drop-back and sling it NFL as Tampa 2 disciples.
27. Texans
Ryan Mallet clearly knows he's not an NFL caliber quarterback, and perhaps Brian Hoyer needs to figure that out, too. If the Colts were running away with the AFC South, perhaps we'd have a Tom Savage sighting, but that doesn't appear likely. The Texans have already quit on O'Brien, which goes to show that hard-asses can sometimes lose their players after so much hot-headed nonsense.
28. Bears
I hate to drop them after a bye but what can I say, some teams climbed and some fell, so the Bears simply move down the mountain. It would not surprise me if they beat Minnesota this week, though, as Minnesota hasn't won at Soldier Field since 2007.
29. Jags
It's not like they don't have the offensive firepower to string some wins together. Gus Bradley has to figure out how to get that defense going, though.
30. Chiefs
Credit to Andy Reid's staff for taking advantage of a young quarterback and getting a win complementary of Ben Roethlisberger's MCL.
31. 49ers
I considered the 49ers at 32 but the Titans simply don't show any fight.
32. Titans
Yet another team that is already quitting on their coach. I wonder if Mettenberger took a selfie after this loss.
