"Fred Hoiberg has boarded a private plane. Heading to Chicago now. Hes expected to formally become the Bulls coach later today, Im told," reported CBS Sports' Gary Parrish, citing a source. Hoiberg reportedly has informed Iowa State staff members and players that he is going to coach the Bulls, according to ESPN's Jeff Goodman.
K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune reported the Bulls will make the official announcement at 2 P.M. on Tuesday.
Hoiberg himself denied a deal was done, but he did confirm he's headed to Chicago for meetings, via Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register.
"When this opportunity came about, it was something that interested me," Hoiberg told Birch.
Keith Murphy of WhoTV.com previously reported that the two sides had agreed in principle on a five-year deal but had not yet finalized the money and paperwork on May 31. Murphy added that a press conference will be held Tuesday.
On May 29, Bleacher Report's Howard Beck first reported that Hoiberg is expected to be named the Bulls' new head coach.
Hoiberg is a former NBA guard who spent four seasons with the Bulls during his 10-year playing career. Since taking the Iowa State job in 2010, he's gone 115-56 (.673) and made the NCAA tournament in four straight seasons.
The 42-year-old coach brings an intriguing offensive approach to the table. His Cyclones teams focused heavily on outside shooting and post play while taking few mid-range shots. They also played almost exclusively at a quick tempo.
If the deal with Hoiberg unexpectedly falls through, the Bulls will have to cast a wider net. There is no obvious second option at the moment.
he supposedly has a 5/$25M deal on the table
