TAMPA | The Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven't been afraid to admit their mistakes under the regime of general manager Mark Dominik and coach Raheem Morris.

On Friday, they made another strong statement by trading former first-round draft choice Gaines Adams to the Chicago Bears for a second-round draft choice in 2010.

Adams, the fourth overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft out of Clemson, never lived up to the expectations around him after he signed a six-year deal reportedly worth $42 million. When he was drafted, he had just finished his college career tying for the school's lead in all-time sacks. Adams had 28 sacks, tying him with Michael Dean Perry.

He was a unanimous First-Team All-American in his senior season as well as the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2006 after registering 12.5 sacks.

Yet, the dominant defensive end that set a school record with at least one sack in eight straight games in 2006, never surfaced in the NFL. In two-plus seasons with the Bucs, Adams totaled 13.5 sacks and two interceptions, although the first year he led all rookies with six sacks and led the Bucs with 6.5 sacks in 2008.

Adams, 26, was expected to thrive under the direction of new defensive coordinator Jim Bates, who has had a reputation of making rush ends better. But Adams had just one sack with the Bucs this season to go with his 14 total tackles, although he was tied for second on the team with 10 quarterback pressures.

Now, he is gone.

This is not the first move the Bucs' new regime has made this season.

Tampa Bay released veterans Derrick Brooks, Warrick Dunn, Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard and Cato June in February. The team later released 2008 second-round pick receiver Dexter Jackson during training camp.

Then, 10 days before the start of the regular season, Tampa Bay fired offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski and replaced him with quarterback coach Greg Olson.

Damn a 4th overall..... maybe the Bears see something in him that the Bucs havent. But also you have to consider that Tampa is known for amazing defense so it cant be the tutelage that is wrong, its all on Gaines.

I like the move. Get something for him before he becomes completely useless.

I've still held hope on this guy. I haven't seen much of him since he was drafted but I was a huge fan of his in college. This could be good value for Chicago.

Ahhh man why did this have to happen two weeks before we play the Bears??? I know what he's capable of it's just doing it. None of the Bucs have been playing up to expectations. The Bucs are definitely in a rebuilding stage.

Gaines Adams + Rod Marinelli = ???

Well have to wait and see but with the work Marinelli has done on the DL so far, I can't wait to see how Adams improves with the Bears. A rotation of Ogunleye, Brown, Anderson and Adams at the DE position is pretty stacked.

Don't give Gaines to much credit, since being drafted as a pass-rushing DE, he only has 13.5 career sacks.

Pretty awful.
