This shouldn't be entirely stunning, but Mike Pettine might not be long for Cleveland. The Browns coach could be set to coach his final game with the team on Sunday, according to multiple reports.
According to both Mary Kat Cabot of Cleveland.com and Rand Getlin of NFL.com, the sense around the Browns right now is Pettine's set to be fired by owner Jimmy Haslam after this week.
Cabot reports that "Browns staffers emerged from a meeting" with Pettine understanding it could be the final week for the regime. Getlin reports that "there's a sense" it's the last hurrah for Pettine.
Not that this should be surprising: CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora's been reporting for a while Pettine could be out.
"Coach Mike Pettine talks more each week like a guy daring his owner to fire him, and while perhaps a strong finish by Johnny Manziel saves some of the offensive staff there, it's hard to imagine a scenario where Pettine survives."
Also, he is the coach of a three-win team and working for an organization that specializes in firing its head coach every two years or so.
It's dumb to give anyone less than three years as a head coach, but Cleveland canning Pettine wouldn't be surprising at this point.
Some reports about the Browns holding onto Pettine and letting GM Ray Farmer go have emerged. The idea of anything less than wholesale change feels very difficult to see, especially given the presence of Chip Kelly on the open market.
