ESPN

LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony would like to play together.

If LeBron and Melo end up in Houston, James Harden could end up on the Knicks, ESPN’s Chris Broussard reports in his Insider piece on LeBron’s preferred destinations.

Here’s how it would work:

Houston is one of the five teams on LeBron’s list of preferred destinations.

If the Rockets cleared enough cap space to sign James by trading Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik, they would then try to execute a sign-and-trade with the Knicks for Anthony. Broussard reports that Harden would be a part of such a transaction. And the Knicks would be open to accepting Harden.

Writes Broussard:

"A lot has been made about the possibility of James teaming up with Anthony, and few teams in the league have a better chance of pulling that off than Houston.

"The Rockets are confident they can trade Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin to clear the cap room necessary to offer near-max dollars. ... Assuming the Rockets obtain the cap room to sign James or Anthony, the next step will be to give up their star guard James Harden in a sign-and-trade for whichever superstar (James or Anthony) they don't sign as a free agent.

"Faced with the prospect of losing their superstars, both New York and Miami would be open to accepting Harden in a sign-and-trade."

Question: His defensive issues aside, do you think Harden could thrive in New York in Phil Jackson’s triangle offense?

Oh, and:

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/knicks/post/_/id/57444/broussard-knicks-are-on-lebrons-list

The popular consensus is that LeBron James will end up back in Miami.

But at least the Knicks have made his list of suitors.

The Knicks, Heat, Nets, Rockets and Cavs are teams that James would consider playing for, according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard.

Surprisingly, the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers did not make James’ list of preferred destinations, per Broussard’s story for ESPN Insider.

The problem for New York? The Knicks are severely over the salary cap and would need to make significant moves to create enough space to sign James as a free agent.

The Knicks are currently committed to $68.5 million in player salaries for next season. The salary cap is expected to be set at $62.9 million. So the Knicks would have to shed approximately $26 million to make a competitive offer for James. And, in this scenario, they’d have to sign James before re-signing Anthony, because if they re-signed Anthony first, it would take away the allotted cap space.

Oh my goodness, if we could ditch the most overrated "superstar" in the league because of incoming additions, I'd be so thrilled.

Yeah, I'd rather it didn't, myself, or I'd feel my team didn't earn any potential championships they might acquire. I hope Melo and 'Bron go different places.

i wouldnt take it that far. they earned it by going out and moving all the pieces for this to happen. that's not easy at all.

It's not easy, I agree. On the topic of potentially moving Harden, while I don't like his current deficiencies, moving him takes away a player who could dominate this league for at least 10 more years.

its something to risk when you could get multiple titles out of it. i just don't want to see it happen because of all the future bandwagon fans. it's one thing to not know miami heat history, but no one will know the history of the rockets and that'd be a shame.

What team would Mexi consider his favorite if Harden got traded? Should set up an office pool. I've got 10 bucks on the 76ers after their rookie goes crazy in game 1.

Part of me wants to see Morey come up blank on all three of his major prospects. This Houston team has its primary pieces. If Houston wins a title within the next 1-3 years, I want it to be because Morey landed the right secondary pieces, which were obviously missing in the playoffs.
