Brook Lopez has lost weight since arriving at training camp last fall weighing 290 pounds.

Im at my playing weight, Lopez said with a laugh. I can attribute that to laying in bed for months, but Im back to the weight thats normal for me. Last I checked, I was just under 275 [pounds].

Lopez does not believe carrying more weight caused him to fractured the fifth metatarsal in his foot last December.

I may have been five pounds heavier, but thats not what injured me, he said.

Even if it's not the case with him, certain other big men have had their careers shortened due to bulking up to much. Yao was never fat, but he added a ton of muscle over the years--his physical transformation was absurd. I firmly believe that bulking up too much ended Yao's career.

It's smart for ANY big man with issues with his feet to cut some weight off.

Honestly believe he would be the best center in the league if healthy.

Not a chance nola...
He'd be the best two way center in the league.

Only thing he lacks is rebounding.

Pretty big thing for a center to lack. And no he isn't. Dwight is better two-way. Cousins is better two-way. Bosh is better two-way

Not the least bit true. Like I've told you in the past, watch the guy play. You'll be shocked.

and when I say watch him play, I mean study him, research him. Do some homework. I don't get why there is such a misconception with him, is it because he's a big white supposedly lumbering center? Dwight has him in two areas. Rebounding and PnR defense, Lopez has him everywhere else.

As talented as he may be, I can't take a center who can't rebound as the best center in the league.

Here's a post from last month:

Find a way to watch him play when you have free time and trust me you'll be surprised by what you will see. He's not a good rebounder but the team always rebounds better with him on the floor. I don't know who coached the Lopez twins coming up but while neither are good rebounders both of their teams always rebound better because they find someone and box them out. He may be a poor individual rebounder but he makes the team better, that counts for something. It may be unconventional, but it works. He's excellent defending the post, he's excellent in defending the PnR, he doesn't miss assignments. Now that I think about it I have a long post detailing how good he is defensively but it's probably from last offseason so it would be hard to find.

Dude, I've watched the guy play. I'm not trying to start an argument but you really need to work on not being so condescending towards people. Brook's a solid shot blocker but that's about it.

Don't even try to compare him to Dwight (multiple time DPOY)

I'm not looking for an argument either, but I don't know how else to get my point across without sounding like a raging asshole. If you have truly have studied him and went in without preconceived notions then you would be more aware of how great the guy is defensively.

I'm just like you. Up until last season I thought the guy was shit defensively. He didn't rebound, I thought he was another big white lumbering center who doesn't move well. In all honesty he was shit defensively. Hell there are probably people here that still remember me being totally against the guy three years ago, but the numbers told me otherwise and I began to read articles that told me otherwise. So I left my preconceived notions at the door and went watch a lot of tape of him, and I was surprised what I found. He changed drastically when Avery Johnson was shown the door, but he was showing improvement before that as well. I feel like I need to do a long breakdown detailing how good he is and why he's that good, because it is sad how big of a misconception there is surrounding him.

^ Well that's something you really should work on.

Anyways he has improved but he's not nearly the great defensive center you make him out to be. And the guy isn't a top 5 center in the league. Rebounding is a huge aspect for a center and he's terrible at it

Basketball is a five man team game. Like I said in that post I quoted he's a good team rebounder because he boxes out and let's his teammates attack the boards. With him on the court Brooklyn was inside the top half of the league in rebounding, without him they were among the bottom three. That counts for something.
