New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards was charged with misdemeanor assault Monday in connection with an incident outside a night club in Cleveland, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported on its Web site, citing Cleveland Municipal Court officials.
The alleged incident, in which Edwards is accused of punching a friend of LeBron James, occurred early in the morning on Oct. 4, when Edwards was still with the Cleveland Browns. Edwards was traded to the Jets days after the incident in question.
Edwards faces a sentence of up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted, according to the newspaper. His arraignment hearing is scheduled for Nov. 17.
Regardless of the outcome of the case, Edwards could face discipline from the NFL. Commissioner Roger Goodell has in the past punished players for their conduct even when those players were not convicted of a crime.
