BEREA, Ohio -- Brandon Weeden is officially the Browns' starting quarterback.

Coach Pat Shurmur announced what had been an open secret after practice on Monday: Weeden, the No. 22 overall pick, will start Friday night in Detroit. Weeden has taken snaps with the first-team offense throughout training camp.

Incumbent starter Colt McCoy is now in competition with 10-year veteran Seneca Wallace for the backup job.

Shurmur is confident Weeden, a 28-year-old rookie from Oklahoma State, will be able to guide Cleveland's west coast-style offense. The second-year coach added that having both McCoy and Wallace available as reserves puts the Browns in an enviable spot at the position.

Cleveland, with McCoy under center most of the way, went 4-12 last season.
What was expected.

The Browns offense actually has a chance to be good this year with Weeden, T-Rich, Gordon, Little and Massaquoi (even though he kinda sucks). Solid O-Line as well.

Probably would have called him a bust if he didn't start from day 1, being 28 years old.

Hope this works out for them. Heard he's been really struggling.

2. The Browns believe Weeden is the real deal: Drafted at 28 years old, Weeden was one of the most discussed selections in the 2012 draft. He displays a strong arm and shows a good grasp of Shurmur's system. If the new ownership gives Weeden the chance to grow in Shurmur's offense, Weeden may be the quarterback this franchise has been seeking since it came back as an expansion team in 1999. Unfortunately, ownership changes lead to coaching changes, so Shurmur is on the hot seat in his second season. Weeden isn't, though. He's bigger and stronger than Colt McCoy, so it will be only a matter of a week or two before he wins the starting job. Baseball delayed Weeden's entry into football. He may not be a home run for the Browns, but he's at least a double in first impressions.

But, after 40 days and 10 practices with the Browns, there is one assessment of Weeden that everyone can agree upon: The rookie first-round pick has the look of a franchise quarterback.

Both those things were said about Gabbert last year in training camp lol
Not to mention that that's ESPN... they don't know very much.

Selected with No. 22 overall pick in April’s draft — much earlier than predicted — Weeden impressed the Browns’ coaching staff and teammates during offseason minicamps with his accuracy and intellect. He displayed a nice touch on short tosses and showed off his long-range capability by launching a few 60-yard throws.

He looked and acted the part, which didn’t surprise former Oklahoma State teammate Justin Blackmon.

You said he has been "really struggling". I have yet to read anything about him not looking good in camp.

He's going to die of natural causes/old age.

Maybe it was from a Browns hate site or something lol idk

Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmer is wasting no time trying to find out what he has at the quarterback position. He is pitting rookie Brandon Weeden and third year QB Colt McCoy against a Browns pass defense that ranked second int the NFL in 2011. They have been running 3rd-and-long drills and both quarterbacks are getting fleeced by the secondary. Chris Pokorny over at Dawgs by Nature is reporting that Joe Haden alone had five pass defenses and managed to intercept Weeden's first ever pass in 11-on-11 drills.

Well...other than one throw, he didn't look to good. Looks like he's not going to be a solid starter this year, which means he'll be 30 by the time he is, assuming he will make the leap next year.

It's not one game lol
We knew he wasn't ready coming in. His game against Texas from last year, was one of the worst games I saw out of ANY QB in the draft. He's got all the tools, but people thought his age meant he was NFL ready. It was clear he would need some time.

Draw conclusions from 3 series' is always smart.

Andy Dalton was terrible in the pre-season last year

And I guess your boy Kirk Cousins is pretty bad, as shown by his pre-season performance against Bills 3rd stringers.

Kirk Cousins wasn't drafted to be the saviour of a franchise at 29 years old. He doesn't need to perform here and now. He's allowed to be a rookie. Big difference there. Same for Dalton. Sure he was the QB they wanted, but people thought going in he would need time- he didn't nearly have the pressure to perform right away that Weeden does. As for Weeden, it isn't drawn from three series at all. This goes back to college. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with a QB playing like a rookie QB. I'm simply exhausting the opinion that it was silly for people to think Weeden could come in right away and be a good NFL QB. You could see in his college play he would need time to develop, and people thought just because he was old that meant he was NFL ready, but that isn't the case, and yesterday proved it for me. I didn't see any improvements on the very same questions I had from his college game. I liked Weeden as a guy, and like I said, he has the tools, but it'll take another year, IMO. He's going to show some flashes this year for sure, but I'm not expecting anything too great.

I don't have a problem basing your opinion on his college games, but drawing anything from 3 series' is stupid.
