The 76ers have elected to use their amnesty clause on Elton Brand, according to sources.

Brand has one season at $18 million left on his contract, which will come off Philadelphia's cap.

The 76ers must wait until July 11th to officially amnesty Brand.

Brand will go on waivers and become an unrestricted free agent if he goes unclaimed.

I'm not sure it makes sense because expiring contracts have value, plus Brand was a key cog for them in the middle of that defense. I could see him going to Miami or some place like that.

Wanted the cap now to sign Nick Young.

I'm sure a team will claim him off waivers before he gets to Miami.

Apparently they had the ability to sign Nick Young either way.

Also, it's only a one-year deal, so it's definitely not because of that.

Well it was both for that, and what is likely a larger move coming. They obviously aren't just going to cut someone on a one year deal like that...
