Boldin back on the block?
Anquan Boldin | Cardinals | Interested: Titans? 49ers? Jets? Giants? Jaguars? Broncos? Cowboys?
With the first wave of free agency essentially concluded, football prognosticators are now focused primarily on the draft, which is still over a month away. In order to pass the time, it appears that Anquan Boldin's name has been fed back into the rumor mill, with some new doozies coming out the other end. All of this, of course, is in spite of Arizona Cardinals general manager Rod Graves' repeated refrain that Boldin is not on the trading block, as he recently told the Arizona Republic.
The team that is arguably in greatest need of a top-tier wide receiver is the New York Giants. The team's run-heavy strategy was surely a hit with football purists, but here are the facts: in 2007, Plaxico Burress was on the field and the team won the Super Bowl. Through the first 11 weeks of 2008, Burress was on the field and the team had just one loss. In the remaining six weeks of the regular season, Burress was not on the field and the team went 3-3 before losing a home playoff game to the hated Philadelphia Eagles. Clearly this team can be transformed by another standout wide receiver, and Boldin would surely fit the bill. Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News has vetted this possibility through his sources with the team, and they have not ruled out the possibility of Boldin playing for Big Blue in 2009. The Giants would likely part ways with one of their many starter-caliber defensive linemen as well as one of ten draft picks, and would also need to show some finesse with the salary cap in order to afford Boldin.
Of course, the Giants might also go after Torry Holt, who many believe is set to be released before Tuesday. The New York Jets, on the other hand, will not, a source has confirmed to ESPN Radio 1050's Andrew Marchand. This begs the question: are the Jets really content going into 2009 with Jerricho Cotchery as their No. 1 receiver? It might be ironic to see Boldin in a Jets uniform, given the fact that he suffered a facial fracture during a game against Gang Green in 2008, but the team may try to bring him in to give presumptive starter Kellen Clemens a safety valve, much as Burress was for Eli Manning.
Numerous other possibilities abound, as Boldin is better than the No. 1 receiver on many teams. The Jacksonville Jaguars sure need some help given that their top receiver has had repeated legal issues, no one knows what's going to happen with the San Francisco 49ers, the Tennessee Titans are still without a top-flight weapon in the receiving corps, and the list goes on and on. Until Boldin reaches an extension to his liking with the Cardinals, or until he actually is traded, this conjecture will continue, no matter what Graves wants the public to believe.
