I just realized the Pels aren't even on that little picture in the article.

Bill Simmons suggested the Cavs trade Dion Waiters and Anderson Varejao for Pau Gasol.

Im now wondering if he actually knows anything about basketball.

You're just now wondering this?  Simmons is one of the most knowledgeable guys about the history of the game, but he doesn't know jack shit about today's game.  If you are going to listen to Simmons, then listen to him for the entertainment part of it, not to learn something.

Also, the Pels video is pretty bad.  Jalen uses facts, and likes the Pelicans.  Expects an 7-8 seed.  Simmons, who is notorious for bad picks, simply said his gut doesn't like the team.  Personally, I would be more worried if Simmons loved us and Jalen didn't.  Zach Lowe's predictions will be much better.

But since this video is out, Simmons is hung up on the fact that we have Jrue, Gordon, and Reke.  He never mentions that Reke can play three positions, and that Gordon and Jrue can both play on the ball and off the ball.  I don't think he even mentioned Anthony Davis, which is weird and shows he wasn't really prepared for the video.  Davis is the best player on this team, and he's the key to how far they go.

He's also saying the Pels will finish with the 7th pick.  Last season, the 7th pick had one more win than the Hornets.  So Simmons is saying that after a offseason where Anthony Davis looks dominate on both ends, the huge upgrade at PG, adding Reke, Eric Gordon actually being healthy, that the Pels will only improve by one win?

What did you think of the hypothetical trade?

I'm kind of 50/50 on it, I think it really depends on what Monty and Dell want to do.  I think if they want to play a faster pace, then Anderson is the guy.  But if they want to grind it out and play halfcourt and good defense, then Asik is the guy.  The thing that scares me is that I think Anderson makes the Rockets better than Asik makes the Pelicans.  Which imo, is one of the reasons why this trade hasn't happened, and probably won't happen.

Then you have to think about who fits better next to AD.  Right now, because of his still slim frame, I would say Asik would be a good pairing.  But give it two years from now, when Davis is 240-245 lbs, I would say Anderson is better.  Which again, is imo why this trade hasn't happened.  Plus, having Anderson on the floor with guys like Jrue, Gordon, and Reke is deadly.
