Michael Lombardi of NFL.com reports that the Bengals want to pick a receiver in the first round, and then take a quarterback in the second. Lombardi goes on the write that it would not shock him that, even if Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green was off the board when Cincinnati was on the clock, the Bengals would stick with their plan and select Alabama's Julio Jones fourth overall. The Bengals designate specific positions for each round, and their first round is being used for a wide receiver.

I'm a Bengals fan, and I've often been critical of the general tendency of teams to strictly go BPA. I think teams need to be cognizant of needs, but not take inferior players in order to fill needs. There needs to be a balance.

However, this plan, and strictly slotting things based on round, is the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard.

Nope.

Jags use to go Need 1st when we had Shack Harris at GM.

Thats what got us Derrick Harvey, Reggie Williams, Matt Jones, Byron Leftwich, Reggie Nelson, etc.

Since we started picking BPA.

Every draft pick the past 2 seasons have stayed on the roster.

Also drafted good stars in Eugene Monroe, Tyson Alualu, Eben Britton, Terrance Knighton, and good players like Derek Cox and Mike Thomas.

BPA > Need.

Nah I don't disagree with you, I'm just talking about going strictly BPA. Obviously strictly going by what you need the most gets teams in trouble.

Though if what you need most is QB, always take the QB.
Look at the Dolphins. Sure they got the best player in the draft at the time, but it didn't do much for them.
Sure QB's will bust too, but you need to take the chance.

So it'll be the most talented player in the Draft at WR, AJ. Not a bad move.

Wow....what a dumb fucking strategy. Pick up a good defensive player off the bat, and then draft a receiver later. Names such as Austin Pettis will be around for a couple rounds.

Fair enough, but really I don't see how taking A.J Green is a bad move. Yeah, I think that this team needs a ton of help, and going into the Draft CLEARLY locked in onto the players you want would be a bad idea, but come on. An elite WR like Green is going to be a big time help to a fan base who needs it desperately. He's easily got the talent to be a guy like a Calvin Johnson, and if the right players mesh with that impact it'll help pretty fast for this team.

If AJ Green is available at number 4,they should take him. If not, don't take Julio Jones, theres too many other better players that Cincy can't afford to pass up on.

i'm not upset at all with the addition of A.J. Green if indeed it does end up happening. He's clearly talented and WR is definitely a big need for us, as is QB.
