TSN has confirmed that Toronto Argonauts quarterback Damon Allen will announce his retirement Wednesday. A press conference has been called from 2pm et/11am pt.
Allen confirmed that he will stay on with the team in some capacity, though it won't be as a coach.
After suffering a season-ending injury in August, Allen spent much of the 2007 season as a backup to Michael Bishop. During the offseason, the Argos bolstered their QB position by acquiring last season's CFL most outstanding player Kerry Joseph. With both Joseph and Bishop in the fold, it was unclear where Allen would fit into the Argo's plans for the upcoming season.
Allen would retire as professional football's all-time passing leader with 72,381 yards. He won a grey Cup in 2004, at the age of 41, with the Argos and was named the CFL's most outstanding player the following year.
The 23-year veteran was #14 on TSN's Top 50 CFL players of all-time.
