Are Hinkie's days numbered?

The Philadelphia 76ers' sudden hiring of Jerry Colangelo to the newly created position of chairman of basketball operations and special adviser has predictably focused attention on the future of general manager Sam Hinkie.

And it sounds like Hinkie's time in Philadelphia could be running out.

"It's clear (Hinkie) has, for all intents and purposes, been fired," an NBA source told Calkins Media's Tom Moore.

While other league owners have not publicly criticized Hinkie's long-term plan to rebuild the 76ers - known as "The Process" - Colangelo's hiring reportedly came at the behest of a significant portion of the league.

Colangelo is widely respected with 50 years of basketball experience. He helped grow the Phoenix Suns franchise from the ground up and took the reins of USA Basketball after a disappointing performance at the 2004 Olympics.

The same source told Moore that Colangelo's son, Bryan Colangelo, the former GM of the Suns and Toronto Raptors, could also get involved with the 76ers. "I know Bryan," Moore quotes the source as saying. "Bryan's going to be involved."

Hinkie was hired by Sixers owner Josh Harris in 2013 after the disastrous one-season tenure of Tony DiLeo, who traded three players - including Andre Iguodala and Nikola Vucevic - and a draft pick for Andrew Bynum. Hinkie had spent the previous eight years as vice president of the Houston Rockets, working alongside Daryl Morey.

Regardless of one's opinion of Sam Hinkie, I'm not sure I would consider hiring Jerry Colangelo, a man who hasn't run a franchise in a decade, while potentially hiring his son, who doesn't have a good track record.

Just sucks for him that they got bad luck in the lotto

Imagine if they were able to take jabari and dangelo russell?
Or the wolves tandem of wiggins and kat

Obviously youre gonna say hes got to adapt to the cards he was dealt, true but man luck plays a big part

They lost any shot at luck when they sold their souls and decided to embarrass the league

I like how nola is being holier than thou about a team potentially lucking into the #1 pick. I guess you don't need luck when David Stern hands your shitty franchise/city Anthony Davis two years after Roger Goodell hands the Saints a Super Bowl*.

That's funny, do you believe in UFO's as well? Lochness? Bigfoot? Elvis, Tupac, Biggie, and Marlyn Monroe are alive!

Can we talk about Phillys approach of drafting big men who fell in the draft due to injuries? That's a pretty questionable strategy in itself.

People in denial WOULD throw out radical examples, so I guess I do have a point.

both were bpa dude at the time

Embiid would have gone #1 if healthy, but even with health concerns was the obvious pick. The next "best" pick would have been Exum, which was identical to MCW being a tall guard that can't shoot. Embiid was a good pick that failed.

Okafor was talked about as the clear #2 big man in this draft. Don't use hindsight at all: Okafor was on almost every team's board above Porzingis. If the Sixers went Mudiay or someone, the Knicks probably would have taken Jahlil too. And he was selected with the mind that they busted the year before due to injury.

Any team with Philly's picks at that time makes those selections, barring positional blocking. Hardly questionable at all.

And with Jahlil -- he hates the situation he is in, because he doesn't want to be on a losing team, and as a kid he's becoming disgruntled and a distraction. That's something the Sixers should have looked into, but it would have been impossible to know

Sixers just got unlucky with drafting, that's all

Let's just say anytime someone suggests the Pelicans or Saints were handed anything I sit back and laugh at the idiocy of it.

It's more than questionable, smart teams don't take bigs with big time injury concerns, let alone do it twice.

With that said, I don't mind the Noel pick. The Embiid pick was beyond stupid though, everyone knew that dude was an injury waiting to happen.
