Uhhhhh.Forget for a minute all the Super Bowl talk in Philadelphia that happened before this season, often originating from the team’s front office.
Coach Andy Reid would like to point out that the Eagles are young, and being successful with a young team “takes time.”
“If you stay in one place long enough, age catches all players no matter how great they are; they’re going to outplay their career and you’ve got to rebuild it,” Reid said on his radio show this week via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “We’re going through that. You look down the middle of our defense and we are young, young.”
“People perceive us to be an old football team, but we’re really not an old football team. We’re one of the youngest teams in the [NFL]. That takes time.”
The Eagles roster was the sixth-youngest on average to start the season. Then again, roughly half of their starters are going to be 30 years old next season including three starting linemen on both sides of the ball and three of their top four cornerbacks.
Another factor working against Reid: The team was young last year and they hosted a playoff game. We heard multiple times this offseason that the Eagles were “all in” and this team was Super Bowl or bust. Their time is now.
Reid’s consistent success in Philadelphia has raised the bar. No matter how young this Eagles team is, there’s no doubt this is the most disappointing year of Reid’s tenure.
