Alex Smith is tired of waiting around for the 49ers to learn whether they’ve won the Peyton Manning sweepstakes. So Smith is looking elsewhere.

Smith will visit the Dolphins today, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

After having his best year as a pro and leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game last season, it appeared that Smith was going to be in San Francisco for the long haul. But Smith is an unrestricted free agent and hasn’t worked out a deal with the 49ers yet, because the 49ers are making Manning their top priority. That puts Smith in a tough position.

So it makes sense for Smith to stop waiting and start looking around for another team. The Dolphins, who want to sign a starting quarterback and were spurned by Manning, could make sense for Smith, especially if free agent quarterback Matt Flynn picks the Seahawks over the Dolphins.

The 49ers spent the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft on Smith, and he has spent his entire career there. In 2011 Smith started all 16 games and had career highs in passing yards (3,144) and passer rating (90.7) while throwing just five interceptions.

And now the pressure is on the 49ers to get something done at the quarterback position: If Smith signs with the Dolphins, and Manning chooses the Broncos or Titans, last season’s NFC runner ups will have a major question mark at quarterback.

Denver Post - According to league sources, the Dolphins and free-agent quarterback Alex Smith are in negotiations on a contract.

The assumption was that Smith would re-sign with the 49ers, but he has flirted with Miami even since San Francisco emerged as suitors for Peyton Manning.

Smith visited with the Dolphins over the weekend. Manning reportedly turned down Miami and they lost another possible quarterback in Matt Flynn, who joined the Seahawks, as well.

The two sides are believed to be talking about a multiyear deal worth about $8 million annually.
Feel like he is going to suck without Harbaugh lol.
Manning to San Fran must be inevitable then.

If I was Alex Smith I would be trying to hurry to resign with the Niners at this point with Manning apparently on his way to Denver. Once again, the Dolphins fall flat on their face and better have a Plan G at this point.

Interesting to see if he would want to go back to San Fran after they were about to sign Peyton like that.
I'm sure money will make him forget all about it though lol.

It will be extremely awkward for Alex Smith to go back to the 49ers. Its like oh hey you didnt want me before, but now they want him because he is the best option. Wow what a vote of confidence from your team, lol. This will not be good for Smith and the 49ers moving forward.

San Fran NEEDS to sign Alex Smith

Like Miami can draft Tannehill, or sign Tebow.
Tebow would not fit in SF, and Tannehill would be gone.

So if Smith signs in Miami, these are the probable choices.

1. Reach in Rd 1 to draft Cousins, have a competition with Kaepernick for the starting job
2. Sign a shitty ass QB like Vince Young, Donavan McNabb, etc.
3. Sign Brian Hoyer's 2nd round tender.

IMO out of those 3, the third seems like the best option. Hoyer would produce the best stats out of all the named QBs in situations 1 and 2

If the Niners for some reason brought in Tebow the sideline reaction of Harbaugh in watching various throws and decisions could be worth the price of admission alone.
