Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith will not play in Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers after suffering a lacerated spleen, the team announced Friday.
Trainer Rick Burkholder indicated that Smith would not require surgery, but that these injuries typically take six weeks to heal, thus likely bringing an end to his 2014 season.
The injury is a crushing blow for Smith and the team, as Kansas City remains alive in the playoff race heading into Sunday's slate of games.
With the Chiefs needing both a win and plenty of help to earn a Wild Card spot in the playoffs, sixth-year pro Chase Daniel will get the start in Smith's absence.
