All the hard work the Diamondbacks did retooling goes to waste this year. Greinke is good, but Shelby Miller isn't anything to write home about. Dodgers decline after losing Greinke, and Giants win the division (and I think just barely). It's going to be close, but I pick Giants. Not a fan of Cueto, but he will be successful in the NL. Samardzija isn't that great either, but again he's in the NL and adding to an already strengthened Giants team.
Hard to bet against the Giants in an even year but I still have them in the WC. I'm a big fan of Dave Roberts and I like the way he's calling some of these games, granted it still Spring. LA will outspend anyone to strengthen the roster at the deadline and I see them making a pair of blockbuster moves come deadline time. The D-Backs are my dark horse team b/c I'm in the minority that believes Yasmany Tomas will be a big run producer in his 1st full season.
Sorry superstitious Giants fans and hopeful D-Backs fans, but money wins. Dodgers are so desperate, so rich and so apathetic of the luxury tax that they will do win more and more and more. Even without Greinke, the Dodgers will fill any holes they have with money, and they have. However, there are two teams that I believe has a good chance to take them down; 1. the D-Backs. This is not a repeat of the Padres, Marlins and Red Sox because they had proven stars already on their team before the big offseason moves with Goldy and Pollock. I was not a big fan of the Shelby Miller trade, however it will help them now for sure. 2. As for the Giants, I believe they will do well but their superstition will not carry them, but it COULD. Samardzija is one of the worst contracts I've ever seen, and Cueto is iffy but not good enough to turn the team, but they were already pretty good last year and the fact that they made improvement makes me not want to count them out. The Padres & Rockies do not seem to have any sight of October with these three teams blocking their view.
The Dodgers are projected by FanGraphs to have one of the best rotations in baseball, even after losing Greinke. I think they are really solid defensively, and as long as Grandal can stay healthy, maybe Joc can get his groove back and the Dodgers should be able to put up some runs. Really good bench too, except for paying Utley a lot of money to be able to play a couple positions. I feel like the Giants and DBacks could either be 2 or 3 but neither will have a shot to win the division. The Giants added Samardzija and Cueto, but I don't expect either to have a huge impact, maybe 12 or 13 game winners with mid 3 ERA. Arizona vastly overpaid for Miller and Greinke and while they have some really nice young position guys, they still have some defensive questions. The Rockies have some awesome position guys that will help them win some games, but their pitching will continue to be Rockies pitching. The Padres will just continue to be terrible. Poor Matt Kemp.
Giants -- I like their depth. They really don't have any gaping holes anywhere.
D'Backs -- a team coming into its own. They gave up a lot to get Miller, but he could be worth the lot. They will hit.
Dodgers -- Who do they have behind Kershaw and Maeda? Their outfield glut has become a weakness. They will miss Ethier a lot.
Rockies -- They hit and have improved their pitching. Defensively, they have some good players.
Padres -- Rebuilding? Shields was supposed to do really well in that ballpark. Kemp has declined markedly. They have a lot of kids looking to make a splash.
