Packers CEO Mark Murphy recently described signing quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a new contract as a “priority.”

Soon, “priority” will be replaced with “reality.”

A new deal with Rodgers could be done soon, possibly before the draft.

“It is his time,” a league source with knowledge of the situation recently told PFT.

When it comes to value, don’t expect another nudging of the bar by a quarter inch or so. With Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco getting $20.1 million per year roughly eight months after Saints quarterback Drew Brees receiver $20 million annually, Rodgers could go as high as $23 million annually.

Which then will become the new height for which other quarterbacks aim.

Meanwhile, the teams with those ultra-high-priced quarterbacks will have less and less cap space available to fill out the other positions on the roster.

I understand these guys want to be paid, but its ridiculous.

When you get paid $23M, players wont be back because the team cannot afford them.

How do you think Rodgers will feel when the team cannot afford to keep the Rajis, Jordys, Cobbs, Tramons, and others because he is taking 19% of the cap. When he starts to complain about the lack of talent around him, its his own fault.

There seems to be this race for the highest paid player in the NFL, and I just do not get it. Nobody goes around saying "hey, remember that QB from the Buccaneers in the 80's, the one that had the largest contract ever at the time?" They say "hey, remember Joe Montana, the great QB who led the 49ers to a dynasty in winning Super Bowl titles?". It should be about the number of rings you get, not the dollars you earn in a paycheck. Plus, taking like $10M a year is still a lot of money

Rodgers is worth that and then some, but at some point, the league is going to have to either implement a max contract (either weighted by position, or whatever), or raise the salary cap significantly to counter-balance these growing contracts.

max contract by position would be smart. they shouldve tried for that during the lockout. allow the players and teams to workout bigger bonuses and what not but cap how high the yearly amount can be.

First of all, Joe Flacco didnt deserve that amount whatsoever. So he inflated the price for a moderate QB. Tom Brady makes significantly less than Flacco, but thats because he restructured his contract so that the Pats could keep someone like Vollmer. If Rodgers is smart he will take a competitive deal, because if he doesnt it will cripple the Packers just like Flacco will cripple the Ravens.
