Aaron Hernandez, Patriots Agree To Long-Term Deal

"The New England Patriots and Pro Bowl tight end Aaron Hernandez have reached agreement on a long-term extension, a source with knowledge of the situation told NFL.com and NFL Network reporter Albert Breer.
A fourth-round pick out of the University of Florida in 2010, Hernandez has started 19 of 28 games over his first two seasons and has 124 receptions for 1,473 yards and 13 touchdowns with eight rushing attempts for 92 yards.

Hernandez, who turns 23 in November, has two years remaining on his four-year, $2.785 million rookie contract. Prior to the agreed upon extension, Hernandez was scheduled to earn $540,000 in base salary with an additional $104,000 available in per-game roster bonuses this season. Hernandez was also scheduled to earn the league minimum base salary ($630,000) with an additional $200,000 available in roster and workout bonuses in 2013."

I knew since Hernandez came out of Florida he was going to be a great TE. I cant believe so many freaking teams passed up on him, he has excellent hands and agility for a TE.

The numbers Hernandez puts up as a #3 option is ridiculous. He gets targeted 16.9% of the time he is on the field. Thats extremely low, and yet, he posted 72 catches, good for 7th in the league (and he played 3 games less than those above him). Just by transfering his YPG and TDPG, his stats would have been near 88 catches, 993 yards, 8 TD on the season, which would have been the 3rd best TE statistically, behind Graham and Gronk. Graham was targeted 22.7% of the time, and Gronk 20.4%. Hernandez is 16.9%.

Graham: 87 rec, 1154 yrds, 10 TD
Gronk: 88 rec, 1301 yrds, 17 TDs
Hernandez: 104 rec, 1175 yrds, 10 TD.


To those who think "Hernandez is solid, but isn't Top 5", he is clearly top 5, and like Cheato said, Top 3 IMO, although Vernon Davis is very good too.

You compare players with stats. Thats the point of statistics; to compare people to others.

Most rankings I see have Witten, Vernon, Gates, and Finley being better than Aaron. Out of those, its Vernon vs Aaron for the #3 TE imo

I'm not getting into the whole ranking thing, but you have to bring up the fact that Hernandez is pretty one dimensional.

He doesn't pass block, and when he run blocks he isn't particularly good at it like some of those guys you listed above.

Hernandez can also play RB, and effectively too. Name any other TE who can play RB and WR effectively, and still decently block

He doesn't decently block though. And he has 8 career carries.

Again, I'm not getting into rankings, but he isn't nearly as well rounded as a guy like Jason Witten, Antonio Gates, or even Vernon Davis.

This is good news for Ryan Mallett, who seems to be the heir apparent to when Tom Brady hangs it up. He'll have Welker, Gronkowski, and Hernandez still around. Not a bad trio of players to have for a developing quarterback.
