49ers running back Marcus Lattimore said he's retiring from football because he's been unable to get his knee "fully back to the level the NFL demands." Lattimore suffered serious knee injuries in 2011 and 2012 while playing for South Carolina.

"After prayer and careful consideration, I have decided it's time to end my professional football career," Lattimore said in a statement. "I have given my heart and soul to the game that I love, and it's time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life and help others. I have given every ounce of my energy toward making a full recovery from my knee injury, and I have made a lot of progress. Unfortunately, getting my knee fully back to the level the NFL demands has proven to be insurmountable."

Lattimore began practicing with the 49ers last week but experienced soreness and was not able to continue. South Carolina's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns (38) and total touchdowns (41), Lattimore never got to play a snap in the NFL.

Man, this really bums me out.  This kid was an elite talent before the injuries, and truly an elite person off the field.  I really wanted him to find a place in the league.

So many young talented RBs having their careers snatched away from them recently.  David Wilson, Lattimore, Jonathan Franklin... Sad.

I was hoping to see him at least be able to get out there and experience what's he has been working so hard for to make happen. It really is a shame, but he didn't end it without a fight, and it's the right decision to retire while he is still able to use his legs.

Smart move, but has to be a horrible feeling to have played football all your life to have it end in the NFL without even playing a single snap.  That's just to bad.
