Source: the #49ers are bracing themselves for the loss of LB Patrick Willis. Expecting him to retire.
10:08am - 9 Mar 15

UPDATE:

Rumors of an impending surprise from the San Francisco 49ers emerged on Monday morning and it looks like the news is indeed a bombshell.

49ers linebacker Patrick Willis will announce his retirement Tuesday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Willis is a seven-time Pro Bowler and five-time first-team All-Pro. He is 30 years old has two years remaining on his contract.

It's unclear why Willis is choosing to retire, but he's battled several significant injuries over the course of his career. He sprained his toe, needed surgery and ended up on IR last season. In 2013, he had surgery on a fractured hand before battling a groin injury.

Perhaps Willis simply feels the time is right to move on to the next phase of life with his health as intact as possible.

This came out of nowhere.  I'm genuinely surprised.

I don't get why more players don't do this, especially the higher paid ones. I'd be out quickly too. Probably quicker than this.

After injury problems for two years I'm not surprised by this and like dan said I'm also surprised more athletes don't do this, especially football which is so physically tolling.

I'm quite surprised by this. Interested to see his reasoning behind it.

Fact: Patrick Willis and Jim Brown will be the only two players in NFL history to make seven straight Pro Bowls and not play in an NFL game at the age of 30 or older.
