Greg Oden will be a restricted free agent during this offseason and the Blazers are almost certain to extend the qualifying offer.

But there are also reports that the Blazers may make a four-year, $40 million offer.

"The way I look at it," he said, "is that it's not their move. It's my move. Everyone says it's their move. I think it's my move."

There is inherent risk in offering long-term money, but it could prove to be a below market contract if Oden remains healthy.

As one Eastern Conference executive put it on Friday, "If you know Oden is a 1-in-20 shot to come back and be a factor, you have to take it. Because not signing him, you have a 0-in-20 shot of being there if he does.

"Still, $40 mil makes you think."

I doubt its true. But I like how they haven't given up on him.

They probably just don't want to see him go to a different team and start beasting once he comes back.

To be honest, I wouldn't even consider Oden for anything more than a 1 year contact. Way too risky.

Yeah, thats why I think its a rumor. The Blazers aren't dumb, they will do a 1 year contract, maybe 2 with a team option, and if he doesn't get healthy...bye-bye.

well it may be a team option, we dont know that now. but if he hits the market and gets a pretty hefty offer they would need to accept. just assuming another team sees something in him would make portland want to keep him. so they offer him this deal would stop him from hitting the market.

the deal would be bottom heavy most likely anyways, so with a team option they would be able to get out of it. and im sure theyd work something out with a buyout option for cheap.

The reason teams are willing to pay is that he's still a very young player and has a chance to get his body stronger and a chance to get on the court and make an impact. If he can get to even half of the level that people thought he would be when he was coming into the league, then he'd be a dominant big anyway. Definitely worth making a run hoping that he'll pan out.

That being said though, it is a lot of money to be handing out to a guy who hasn't been on the court much during his career because of knee injuries. Especially a big guy.

Four years, 40 million will result in.

4 seasons, 4 games played, 4 knee injuries.

Or you can use your $40mil to get a guy who has better than a 5% chance

I'd give Oden a deal for one or two years. The guy is way to good to give up on him after just one contract.

Ugh if this does happen hopefully it's not all guaranteed. Oden's a great player when he's healthy but the problem is he's never healthy. I'd give him no more than 2 years. We'll see what happens.
