Notes:
--I’m not buying the talk about a QB going first overall at all. In fact, I’m not buying that this group of QBs is going to litter the upper reaches of the draft as in most years, and the slotting in this one reflects that notion.
--When I talk to scouts on teams regarding wide receivers, they want three qualities: speed, great hands, and nimble feet in that order. That’s good news for some, very bad news for others, and that plays out here.
--I’m doing some digging on the impact of injuries that force players to miss the Combine workouts, and there are two distinct trends: offensive skill position players fall at least 50% of their projected draft spots (i.e. a player projected at #40 falls to at least #60) outside of potential top 5 picks, while guys in the trenches seldom fall more than a handful. There are variables regarding type and severity or injuries, with the general rule of thumb being the lower on the body, the more it hurts the draft stock. It’s not ironclad but thus far I’ve gone back 5 years and have nearly 50 samples, so it’s not without some statistical merit either. This is very bad news for Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Jahvid Best, Dan Lefevour, and perhaps even Jimmy Clausen.
--The deeper into the draft, the more you should focus on the player and slot than the team picking in that slot. I expect a very heavy trade market in this draft beyond the top 8-10 picks (which nobody wants to trade up into and get hit with the last giant rookie contract bill!), particularly from picks 45-80 and then again at the top of each subsequent round.
--There are instances where I have a team doubling up on a position even in the first three rounds. Before you get all uppity, keep this in mind: in the last 4 drafts, 30 of the 32 teams have taken multiple players at one position in the same draft class. The Colts, Eagles and Patriots do it with shocking regularity and they are three of the most successful franchises in the league.
--As always, please do not mistake the selections here for the selections I would make in the same situations. Sometimes they mesh, often they don’t. This is my best educated guess as to what the teams will do. Teams don’t even have their draft boards or positional rankings finalized yet, so no matter what anyone tells you remember that all mock drafts are pure speculation at this point. If you want to know how I wear my GM hat, I post an annual “What I Would Do” mock draft the week after the Combine.
