The Bynum Benching

I'm just curious as to what everybody's opinion is of this. I, quite frankly, love it. I really do appreciate what Mike Brown is doing with the Lakers. For one thing, I don't think he actually benched Kobe the other night, I think he gave him some rest and hoped the subs could make a run so he could put him back in fresh. Anyway, the Bynum benching--I loved it. This kid is arrogant and immature, to the point that I understand he parks in handicapped spots and just pays the fine. He needs to be put in his place. He needs to have somebody who says, "I don't care how good you are, you aren't running the show." Aside from that, the fuck was he doing shooting a three pointer anyway? I'd have benched him too.

Any thoughts or arguments to the contrary?

you realize if Bynum was disciplined he'd be even better, right? He's an immature kid with a "I'm the greatest thing in the world" complex. Sit his ass down, humble him. He got benched because he took a stupid shot early in the shot clock, and he deserved to ride the pine for it. I appreciate Brown being willing to do that.

Accountability is key when trying to develop an immature player.

If he's going to make stupid decisions, he needs to learn what the consequences are. He's not a goddamn perimeter player.

Players should always have respect for their coach.

You don't have to like him, but you need to respect him.

That reflects much worse on the players than it does on Brown though.

BTW, have you ever met Sullinger? I don't know if you saw my post in the CT, but I would never call a NBA player fat. Just big in basketball terms I guess lol, but Sullinger has a whole lot of work to do on his body. Dude looks like the pillsbury dough boy.

I don't necessarily disagree. My point is the benching isn't going to do much. I do think Brown is an alright coach, but probably not the best fit for this team in terms of their personalities, especially considering how its widely accepted that LeBron ran the Cavs, not Mike Brown. The Lakers players know that, and just do whatever they please.

Brown deserves some credit for trying to change that reputation though.

If Brown really wanted to accomplish something, he should have benched Bynum for the first quarter after Bynum said he'd still shoot threes. I'd be fine with Gasol learning to shoot threes, considering Pau has a tendency to come out for the ball now and then, but Bynum is a paint guy, and always will be.

There is no argument in favor of Bynum. None that has any legitimacy, anyway.

I think the fans are more devoted to their teams than the players are at times. When they lose you can see them smiling and laughing, shaking hands with the other team and chatting it up. As for shooting a 3, there has to be another way to discipline him. Best way would be to trade him for Kevin Love, lol.

Andrew Bynum has very little respect for Mike Brown’s… huddles

Andrew Bynum had the big blow-up with Mike Brown a few weeks ago where he tossed up a three, and then pouted about being benched for the three and poor defensive rotations. And on Sunday, after a disappointing win, if there is such a thing, over the New Orleans Hornets, reporters asked Bynum about Mike Brown’s timeouts. Bynum… well… from the Los Angeles Times:

Kobe Bryant missed his first 15 shots, and so a reporter asked Bynum what Kobe was like in the huddle during timeouts?

“I don’t know,” Bynum said with his characteristic cavalier attitude. “I don’t take part in the huddles.”

Another reporter reacted with disbelief, asking why not.

“I’m resting,” Bynum said. “Getting my Zen on.”

That’s a pretty clear jab about Phil Jackson being better than Brown.

Bynum is a child. He’s still a child, he’s been one for the entirety of his career. From the three-pointers, to the approach to rehab from injuries, to huddles and flagrant fouls, he continues to show a lack of maturity. Great player, second-best center in the league. But there’s something to be said for professionalism. When the Lakers turn to Bynum in a few years as the franchise player, what’s going to be the result without Kobe Bryant’s firm hand or Pau Gasol‘s professionalism? Bynum doesn’t like Brown? Fine. Most reporters and fans don’t either. Kobe Bryant clearly isn’t thrilled, either.

But he should be in the huddles, he should be engaged, he should be putting up a front for the media. The Lakers need everyone to circle the wagons. Whether he likes Brown or not, he needs to protect him as a part of his job, not throw him under the bus. The article also talks about Brown having to try three times to get Bynum’s attention. That should never happen. This is what the Lakers have married themselves to. Hope the dunks are worth it.
