NEW YORK (AP)—Carmelo Anthony(notes) wants his money, even if he’s not saying where he wants it.

Anthony made clear Sunday the importance of a contract extension, which he’s thus far refused to sign with the Denver Nuggets. He also said he doesn’t think the Nuggets would trade him somewhere he wouldn’t accept one.

After the Nuggets’ 129-125 loss to the Knicks, the team Anthony reportedly wants to play for, he was asked the importance of getting an extension before the collective bargaining agreement expires next summer. The NBA wants major salary cuts in the next deal.

“Whatever decision that I make, that’s going to be the first thing that gets done,” Anthony said.

ESPN.com reported later Sunday that Anthony would only accept a long-term extension if it came with a trade to the Knicks.

The Nuggets offered him one worth about $65 million over three years during the summer, but he has said he wanted to keep his options open. He can become a free agent next summer, but Denver would likely attempt to trade him before rather than risk losing him for nothing.

Denver was close to a four-team deal in the preseason that would have sent Anthony to New Jersey, but it fell apart.

Anthony can squash many trades by informing teams he would not take an extension with them. Many clubs would refuse to give up the pieces necessary to acquire the All-Star without a guarantee he would be part of their future.

But Anthony doesn’t believe Denver would try to send him somewhere he didn’t want to go.

“I don’t think that will happen,” he said.

There have been reports since the summer that Anthony’s preference was to play in New York, where he was born, lived his first eight years and was married this summer. But he said after the Nuggets’ practice Saturday that he hadn’t made up his mind.

Anthony scored 31 points Sunday after receiving a loud ovation during pregame introductions.

I don't undestand how Melo could hint these things so early in the season. He's playing for the Nuggets now and that's all he should worry about until off-season time comes around again.

rios, this is a business first and foremost. if he wants to leave then he can speak his mind. i dont agree with the way some players go about that but still..

anyways, if im the nuggets id ask for randolph, some firsts and curry. melo will be leaving, atleast you get a young player and picks along with a massive expiring - pun intended.

that may also make your chances at the playoffs in the west slip so that could mean a higher draft pick which would only help in the newly rebuilding process theyd be going though.

as for the knicks, if they did pull that off then wow. i would love that team

Pugz said everything I wanted to say.

Only thing is I wouldnt send any picks to Denver you get an expiring for CAP room and young asset in Randolph.

No need to over do it when we're the only team they could make a trade with right now.

they dont want Randolph
the Knicks are trying to trade Randolph for a first, i read the rockets would trade the knicks their 1st rounder they got for Tmac last season for Randolph, then the Knicks would trade their pick to Denver

Chris Sherridan suggested Gallo, Curry's expiring, draft picks (including that 1st rounder)

They're trying to trade Randolph for a first? I'd give up an unprotected 2010 for that guy!

Gallo better not go. Give them Curry, future picks, and Buike. Or they can let him walk like Toronto/Cleveland did with their "stars" who were much less open about their desire to leave.

Knicks are obviously really interested for Melo. He could team up with the multiple all star Amare Stoudemire who is having a hell of a year and also with Felton who is having a career year! But Bobcats might have a chance because MJ is pushing it to get Melo right now

The Knicks need to play chicken with the Nuggets. Carmelo only wants to go to the Knicks and thats the only viable option. As more time passes by, the Nuggets will come to the self-realization that they will need to trade him to us to get something out of Melo. All the Knicks need to do is wait for that phone call because we are now in the position of power.

Exactly

No team will trade for him if he's not going to sign an extension, plain and simple. Unless their that desperate and are convinced they can persuade him to sign an extension with them after getting to know the team.

But thats a move that could cost a GM his job, I doubt anyone would take that risk.

So that means they get nothing or they can have Curry and either Randolph or whatever 1st we're trying to get for him. They should be happy with that. They arent going to get equal value for him so they mind as well give up on that dream.

Lol I bet they wish they would have taken our first offer that included Chandler lol

Yea, as you notice as the deal takes longer and longer to get done. The less the Nuggets are going to receive for Carmelo. By the trade deadline, they will receive nothing close to what they wouldve gotten before the season started, now, or moving closer to the deadline.

Carmelo Anthony's intentions are still a subject of some disagreement among the reporters covering the story.

Ken Berger writes that Carmelo Anthony will sign a contract extension upon being traded only if he is dealt to the Knicks. Berger and Chris Sheridan issued their reports around the same time on Sunday and echo a similar strategy from Anthony's camp. However, Berger maintains that Anthony has not ruled out re-signing with the Nuggets.

Berger also disputes that Anthony has actually delivered an ultimatum to the Nuggets, though he states that Denver's front office is nonetheless aware of his demands.

Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post disagrees, writing that the Knicks are not Anthony's only choice and he remains open to other destinations, including New Jersey.

Alan Hahn of Newsday seems to corroborate that Anthony has no interest in the Nets but does not want to publicly reject the team. He cites a person close to Anthony.

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News cites a person in Anthony's camp in reporting that the Bulls continue to be "a viable option" and the Nets are not out of the running.

Denver please just trade Anthony already. Look at all your offers, and make something happen. He doesn't want to be there, so just let him go.

I also heard the Knicks were looking into Memphis' OJ Mayo.
