Im talking like guys that were drafted in 06 and since... and when you think about it, that list would include Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Mark Sanchez, and many more. So who do you think has the best chance to be successful?

My List:

1. Matt Ryan
2. Matthew Stafford
3. Mark Sanchez
4. Joe Flacco
5. Vince Young

Matt Ryan is my obvious first choice. Had such a great rookie year and has a great run game at his side with great receivers at the helm.

2 was tough, I think that Sanchez has the better offense but then I took into account the Lions have a young RB (Kevin Smith) and that they have Calvin Johnson. o me, that offense is in the right direction and the next step would be to improve that defense.

As for Vince, you have to agree that Kerry Collins wont be their starter for too many years, and even if they part with Young I can still see him being a big factor elsewhere.

I highly doubt Stafford will have success, I think he'll be a bust.

How so? He hasn't looked that bad in the preseason, he's thrown a couple of INT's but he's a rookie. He made some nice passes down the field yesterday and could start week 1.

for one, he'll have a terrible O-Line, secondly he was expected to be drafted later in the draft but since the Lions desperately needed a QB they picked him first overall, he's getting payed all-star money, and there's a giant amount of pressure on him to be the next big thing in Detroit

he may have a bad o-line this season but that doesnt mean after a year or two, they could build a better o-line. I mean, they've got the other pieces. A stud a WR, a QB with a lot of potential, and a young RB with a lot of potential who could do some damage.

I always use Eli as a nexample. His first season he sucked, the team sucked, but a few years later that team was in the Super Bowl. Now im not saying that will happen to Stafford, but its just a way of showing you how over a period of 2-4 years, that team could develop and improve their weaknesses.

But the Lions are taking steps to prevent that, he's not the next Joey Harrington, I can guarantee that. With Culpepper, he's not going to be forced to start a la Harrington. He's obviously not going to be successful this year. Obviously. But the Lions with new management are making strides...

that's because they knew the Lions were going to take him
lol, that is so stupid. Yes the Lions need an OLIne but everyone said he and Sanchez will be studs.

Look at my point above. Harrington was forced to start. Stafford is not.

Gosder Cherilus is going to be a franchise tackle. Peterman,Riola,Loper and Backus are all serviceable this season. Next year we're more then likely going to have a top 5 pick so we can take a franchise LT in the draft. We have good offensive threats around him and which means we can build through the trenches in the draft.

not starting right away might prevent him from struggling at first, but it won't effect whether he'll be a superstar or a bust later in his career

Yeah, I misread your post, but David Carr and Harrington are examples of quarterbacks forced to start, on crappy teams, who were busts. Coincidence? I don't think so. The Lions are improving(Hard not to..) and that will only help Stafford. Not starting Game 1 WILL help him out. Getting adjusted to the NFL will help. To be honest, I don't think he's expected to save us this year, Culpepper will start, if he sucks it up, then Stafford will come in and do mop-up duties for the rest of the season.

Awesome point, which is why I said earlier Stafford can be a stud the NFL if he doesnt start much this season, gets time to watch and learn, adjust to the atmosphere and change in physical play/pressure of NFL Defenses, get to know his receivers and lineman, and then step into the role next year or the year after.

Hopefully the Lions make the wise choice and take his career and future seriously, and not throw him into something hes not ready for. The guys around him have to improve before he can be brought on the field.
