AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Michael Curry is coming back as the Detroit Pistons' coach.

Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars held a news conference Wednesday to wrap up a miserable season and he ended any doubt about his plans on the bench by confirming Curry would return.

"It was an up-and-down season for him," Dumars said. "And, an up-and-down season for us."

Curry was 39-43 in his first year as a head coach and his second season in the coaching profession.

• Pistons pick up Bynum option

A Pistons team that opened the season with high hopes couldn't recover from the loss of All-Star point guard Chauncey Billups in a November trade to Denver for Allen Iverson.

The Pistons plummeted to the last spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs and were swept in four lopsided games by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Dumars, though, did not blame Curry for Detroit's demise.

"The fact that we made so many changes for a first-year coach, I had to step back and be a little more patient than I have been," Dumars said. "During the season I said to myself, 'What affect is this having on him as a first-year coach?' I tried to put myself in his shoes."

Dumars fired coach Flip Saunders last year after he led the team to the Eastern Conference finals in each of his three seasons.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- The Detroit Pistons picked up the team option on Will Bynum for next season after he emerged as a reliable scoring threat off the bench.

• Curry coming back as Pistons coach

The 6-foot Bynum appeared in 57 games this season, averaging 7.2 points, 1.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He scored a career-high 32 against Charlotte earlier this month, including a franchise-record 26 points in the fourth quarter.

The Pistons signed Bynum in July after he played for Maccabi Tel Aviv of the Israeli League.

The former Georgia Tech star played 15 games for the Golden State Warriors during 2005-06, but spent most of the season in the NBA Development League.

Curry coming back...really?? Well, we it was his first season, and we didn`t help him really by sucking game after game, but at least we are picking up the option of Bynum, and I guess everyone deserves a second chance, or at least in this case. I mean, even though we had a horrible season, we did sneak into the playoffs.

Bynum was the only Piston playing the last few months
I mean he may have overachieved a little, but he definitely deserves to stay in Detroit

Curry was a rookie coach with a team that changed BIGTIME and he wasn't ready for it. We failed and he lookedlike he failed, but that's why we didn't fire him. He didn't have a real chance to prove himself. Give him one more year, even if we win a 'ship, I do not see him back for a 3rd season.

Why would he not come back if you guys won a title? Which wont happen but if it did why would he get fired?

He's just here for the rebuilding process, he's our scapegoat.
Look at it,we had a rookie coach even if we never amde that trade we wouldn't have had the major success like we are somewhat used too.. and since he's a rook we have our scape goat.

We had a chance to get Avery and prolly 10 more coaches that are better then Curry, but we chose Curry cause he was a Piston and had ZERO coaching experince so when we do fail.. we could have him as our excuse, and look what happened. We made a trade, we failed, we used him as our excuse.

Honestly, I did give him a hard time. Because under the circumstances I'm sure any coach would have a difficultly coaching the team.

But the thing is, I seen maybe 2 or 3 positive things from him the whole season. He just isn't head coach material.

Pistons are done for a while unless they hit the jack pot on free agency and the draft and I don't consider Boozer the jack pot considering he cant play D and is constantly injured. Rip wants out I think, wasn't happy this year, AI is gone, Sheed is gone, Prince is being rumor out. Stuckey and maybe Prince or Rip will be left.

Thanks for the update captain obvious :]
Rip doesn't want out though.
But, I don't see Dumars keeping this team out of it for too long. I'm sure we will be back next season.

I guess the Pistons are looking at David West. West+Boozer = sexy

I again agree.
He's not, but give him time and he could be. I mean there was time where Tay was playing C.. His rotation's is what he needs to fix up.

Cheato, I see us trying to make trades for a C. I guess teams have already been calling about Tay and Rip offering us C's/PF's and offering picks to get some cap relif.
I don't see us going baxk to a top 3 team in the East, but we'll be greatly improved and by 2010 we should be top notch again.

I don't think you can really say that. Seeing as we don't know lol.

You could say that for a lot of people in the NBA.

West+Boozer are FAIL

They both are jumpshooting PF's..

We should deal Rip for Tyson Chandler, then focus on signin BG and CV for our SG/PF spots, then Stuckey will have a pick and roll guy in Tyson we get our defensive guy. Stuckey will have a player to shoot the ball when he drives and kicks it out. And CV will be the x factor while Tay hold the starting 5/team down with his knowledge. We can then sign Dyess with the Min(I think he'd sign if we did something like that)
