Chiefs trade Gonzalez for 2010 draft pick

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade perennial Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons for a second-round pick in the 2010 draft.

Gonzalez had asked the Chiefs for a trade in March if the right deal came along. The only tight end in NFL history selected to 10 Pro Bowls, Gonzalez owns NFL career records at his position with 916 receptions, 10,940 receiving yards, 76 receiving touchdowns and 26 100-yard receiving games.

"On behalf of my family and the Chiefs, I want to thank Tony for his time in Kansas City," Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. "Over the last 12 seasons, Tony has been one of the finest players in Chiefs history, and he will always be remembered as a member of the Chiefs. His play on the field speaks for itself -- he holds almost every major NFL record for tight ends, and he is arguably the best to ever play his position. We wish him the best in Atlanta."

Gonzalez was usually double-teamed last season, in which the Chiefs won only two games, but still caught 96 passes for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns. His 346 receptions since 2005 are more than any other tight end and he has 22 touchdowns in that stretch.

He plans on playing at least one more season and possibly two.

"From an organizational as well as personal standpoint there are mixed emotions," new Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said in the team's statement. "I have the highest personal and professional respect for Tony and consider him to be a future Pro Football Hall of Famer."

I love you Tony . Greatest offensive player in Kansas City Chiefs history. Probably the 2nd greatest Chief behind Derrick Thomas. THE greatest TE in the HISTORY of the NFL.

I really wanted him to retire a Chief, but a part of rebuilding is making some tough decisions about your team. I would have preferred Larry Johnson go first, but noone wants him lol.

But I only wish him the best in Atlanta.

The Pats were a title contender, we are in complete rebuilding mode. We aren't looking to win a Super Bowl in 2010

you don't know this is a horrible move, we can't even judge after the draft, we can only judge once the season starts.

Also, we are in rebuilding mode, TG has 3-4 years left, why not get something for him while he'll still be an asset. It's not like you're going anywhere in the next year or two. It was best for both sides. We got a 2nd round pick in a 2010 draft that is already said to be extremely deep from early indications of who might be coming out.

When i first heard about this. I wanted to the whole chief nation whoop pioli ass. He traded a KC Icon for a 2nd rounder next year. Now we have no offensive weapons.

Also keep in mind we have an offensive wizard head coach in Todd Haley, and a very creative offensive coordinator in Chan Gailey (we went thru 3 different systems last year)
