The league we have here is quite a unique one - a good handful of OG board members, who have been playing sim league for a decade, combined with several from the Retro league, as well as others who have been BSL members for a while. This was a Round Table that TYO was interested in seeing, so I asked a few of the OG members some historical sim league questions. These are their stories.

1. How many leagues have you been in? How do you think the experience from those leagues carries over to the file we have today?

-RipCity- Oh man, that’s a great question. I remember being in my first sim league when I was like 11 years old. Back then it was ran on NBA Live though and they did everything through the game. Think I actually found it through SI because I was looking for CAPs and stumbled upon the league. But I’m 25 now so I’ve been in countless leagues since then. As far as how experience from those leagues have carried over, I’ve definitely learn what is and isn’t a good file. And this current file is a good one.

-TYO-  I've been in around 3 leagues. All of them have been on SI. It's been fun building rivalries over the last six to eight years against certain guys like Dez, Rip, CC, Rios, Stunna and etc. I think the experience helps with drafting and depth charts more than anything. You develop a feel for the type of team you want and how to maximize them in a potential scheme.
-CC- I've honestly lost count of how many leagues I've been in. The first league I ever joined was in 2006 right around when I graduated from middle school. Maybe a year or so later I learned how to be a commissioner, and shortly after I brought the idea of an FBB league over to SI. Having been in so many leagues, you really get a feel for what works in FBB and what doesn't.

-Dez- About 4 if I can remember right, all at SI. All different talent levels but as for how they carry over, in FBB it's all the same... even though the game itself has changed the same formula still works. I think trade wise it's tougher because the standard is all the same but once we get going and a few of these bad RL contracts expire, I think we'll see a bit more trades... a lot recently matter of fact.

2. What is your favorite sim league memory?

-RipCity- Have a lot of fond memories through the sim. Back when I ran a league on SI I won a couple titles and that was certainly a good time. My title in one of CC’s leagues was fun too. But I think my favorite memories looking back now is constantly arguing with CC and creating that rivalry, which extended into just regular debates on the website over literally EVERYTHING. Him and I have always been super cool though off the board, good dude.

-TYO- Winning a title with the Kings in the retro league. I'll forever argue that the starting 5 of that team was the best starting 5 of any sim league forever.

-CC- I can't think of one individual memory, but I'll always remember the original League Chat Thread and how much activity and discussion went down there. The sim league really was real life for us.

-Dez- Definitely my 3 peat. Tmac dominated in that league... it's a shame I don't remember who else I had lol

3. When considering how old the game is, how do you feel seeing other GMs try to mimic real life NBA rosters? (Stretch 4, small ball, etc)

-RipCity- Remains to be seen. I’ve honestly never seen it so I have no idea how it will work. But the game is ancient, so I can’t imagine it was created with intentions for rosters to look like that. Don’t think you’ll be seeing me send out any small ball lineups.

-TYO- I think it's fun to see but typically i'm not sure they'll see the results they want with an old game. Like I doubt you'll see players consistently shooting 7-10 threes a game. Heck some games a team won't shoot that many.

-CC- It's interesting because before this league, I can't remember having people on SI who solely tried to play for what worked in FBB regardless of how idiotic it would be in real life (i.e. playing slow stretch 4's at SF, playing SG's with mediocre handle at PG). It just goes to show how so many people have tried a lot of different things on this game.

-Dez- I think it's interesting... challenges the games traditional needs at certain positions. I think it creates a more realistic playing field, still to be proven if you can win that way though.

4. Which of the OGs has the biggest ego - Who thinks they could match up with any GM on any file and take a series?

-RipCity- LMAO, deadass all of us. I’m going to look like an idiot if these other guys pick one of us out (probably even me), but we all are cocky and think our shit don’t stink and I think they’d all agree with that sentiment. But dez or CC probably has always been the cockiest.

-TYO- CC definitely has the biggest ego now that Rip has mellowed out with old age but it's all in fun. It's not some mean spirited shit but just moreso competition between guys that have had friendships spanning years. As far as a file matchup I think we all think we could win. If CC or Rip wasn't simming it i feel confident my team would kick all of their ass tbh.

-CC- I'd be shocked if the other GM's all didn't say me, but I honestly don't have that big of an ego when it comes to FBB. I'll go with dez. You could give him any roster and he'll think he could tweak the depth chart in a way that could get him a series win over anybody else. He's definitely built some great teams in the past.

-Dez- Young or CC... but I'll say Young cause like me regardless the roster - long as he built it, there's that faith imma get dubs. I respect that.

5. What does sim league mean to you? Seeing so many deep rooted connections, do you see the league as extended family in fun competition? Or is it more about winning it all friendships be damned?

-RipCity- Little bit of both. Made some good friends over the years through the leagues here. It’s an excellent way to kill some free time and love tinkering with rosters and trying to trade with other dudes to further than comradery. But when it’s all said and done if I’m not winning titles it’s relatively pointless, just like real sports. You do it for the rings.

-TYO- What it means for me is a just a fun outlet and a competitive one at the same time. It's a balance for me it's real competitive as we all want to win. But it's fun to compete against guys you've known for years. It is sort of an extended family in a way.

-CC- The SI community is so cool because so many of us came on right around the beginning when we were relatively young and essentially grew up on the site together. The sim league was definitely a huge part of that too. There were multiple times where I had stopped posting on the site all together and was talked into coming back solely to run the league to try and help the site. We all have a good respect for each other but there are definitely deep-rooted rivalries and beating other OG's is always a little sweeter.

-Dez- A mix of it all.. I'm competitive as shit so getting wins is first and foremost but it's fun to see how you relate, negotiations, trade talks... it's all fun to me. Like mini scale running a franchise thru n thru.

6. How long did it take you to learn the FBB ropes? Did you learn as you went, or was there someone you looked to for advice or game knowledge?

-RipCity- Yeah I definitely leaned on someone at first, but it was so long ago I can’t even remember who. But they hooked me up with the software, which I still have, so I would constantly tinker with it. I would make files and see how things work. But I wouldn’t say that the learning curve for the program is too steep.

-TYO- Rip and CC helped me a lot as I started. Then i leaned on Stunna a lot as we both were learning at the same time. But I kind of learned on the fly as well. It was a combination thing for me.

-CC- FBB is definitely a "learn-as-you-go" kind of game. Every new GM makes that one horrendous trade in their first season. Whenever you see a dominant team, it's important to look at why that team is successful. Maybe you'll learn something that you can implement in the future. At the end of the day, FBB is a series of random computer simulations. All you can do is put your team in the best position possible and hope for the best.

-Dez- I'd say at least 2 leagues. I think the first league we had I had a solid squad led by Elton Brand - hence the nostalgia - and fucked it up in this massive ass trade with like 7 teams lol. I don't remember if I drafted that team or inherited it. In the 2nd I kept a real roster, but never lived up to expectations. Got rings now tho lol.

7. Who do you think has created the best team (in any league) that you know from this league?

-RipCity- Man I wish I could remember who I had, but my teams in the league I ran were untouchable. I think CC still thinks I rigged that league to this day haha.

-TYO- My Kings title team. Next question. MJ and Nique on the wing. Chris Jackson and Tom CHambers as your 3rd and 4th options....good luck stopping those guys.

-CC- Anybody who doesn't say CC's Celtics is still bitter and needs to get over it. The construction of the team was certainly controversial (although completely within the rules made for the league), but there isn't a team in SI history that beats them in a 7-game series.

-Dez- Had to be CCs punk ass 4 peat squad. Respect I guess lol. Or mine, or funny enough back in the day this racist MF named Yanks had a all white squad that was real lol. Technically wasn't all white cause I remember Yao being on it but I gotta give props where due lol

8. Who’s the best commissioner to ever run a league you were a part of - What made them the best?

-RipCity- Well the only ones I can honestly remember are me and CC. I thought I was a pretty good commish, but I’d definitely say CC is better. He’s put the time in to it over and over again. He’s the best because he’s dedicated and puts in the work. I applaud him for that.

-TYO- They've all been pretty cool to be frank.

-CC- I haven't been in a league that wasn't run by me since 2007 or so, so I'll go with myself. I can definitely own that there were moments in past leagues where I was not easy to work with, but I always tried to do what was best for the league and the site. As I've fully matured, I'd like to think that I'm bringing all the good commissioner traits I have into this new league and leaving the past back in 2014. Personally, I like that the SI leagues try to lean towards a more realistic structure rather than allowing some of the gimmicky things (i.e. cutbacks) that you see in other FBB leagues.

-Dez- Read the question wrong and answered "best GM" lol - so here's a shotout from Dez to: CC, Pugzo, Rip, BoSox, Brack, Username, and myself. Thanks Dez! Respect back to ya bro.

Here's a shoutout to all the other OGs who were not included this go around. Pugzo, BoSox, Username and I'm sure I'm missing a few others but I'm still getting to know the league. Thanks for reading, and thanks also to those who participated.
